The Embarcadero & FiDi are built on top of ships that were abandoned in the 1849 gold rush - people were so eager to strike it rich that they abandoned their ships and headed for the hills... and the rubble was used to fill in the land. They are still finding ships buried there.

In 1848, San Francisco was a dusty town of 800 people. Gold was discovered that year, but word spread slowly, until an enterprising man named Sam Brannan changed everything.

He bought up every pick, shovel, and pan he could find, then ran through the streets shouting, “Gold! Gold on the American River!”

He sold 20-cent pans for $15 (~$500 today) and became California’s first millionaire, without mining a single ounce of gold.

We owe him for the “picks and shovels” metaphor we use in startups today: in a gold rush, sell tools.

At the end of 1848, President Polk confirmed the discovery to Congress, and newspapers across the world picked up the story. This set off the gold rush. People came from the East Coast, Australia, China, and Europe, all in search of fortune.

By 1851, San Francisco had grown to 25,000 people. There were over 800 ships abandoned as people went to the hills as soon as they landed in search of their gold. They called it the “forest of masts.”

Folks who stayed behind made use of what was left behind- the ships. Many hulls became hotels, storeships, saloons, and even a jail. As the city filled in Yerba Buena Cove to create new land (you can see the original waterline in yellow in the map), these ships were buried beneath the streets of what’s now the Financial District.

Builders still uncover timbers, anchors, and gold rush artifacts during excavations. One of the most famous ships, the Niantic, was beached in 1849 and turned into a hotel and warehouse. Its remains are still buried at the corner of Clay and Sansome near the Transamerica Pyramid.

When the pyramid was being built, excavators uncovered more of the Niantic, along with an full intact case of Jacquesson & Fils champagne from 1849... now on display at the maritime museum. I think they should auction off one of the bottles. Jacquesson is still producing champagne today.

Fun fact: the company that created Pokemon Go is a Google spinoff called Niantic... named after the ship. Founder John Hanke was inspired by the idea that just like the Niantic is buried beneath the city, the world around us is full of hidden layers and stories-- if you know where to look. That became the company’s mission: build AR games that uncover layers in the real world.

The Old Ship Saloon (across from the Battery), was built on the hull of the Arkansas, which wrecked on the original shoreline. It opened in 1851 and is the oldest bar in the West.
Parts of the Muni go through ships too - the N, K, and T lines run through the hull of The Rome - it didn't make sense to move it when they built the muni line.

I badly want real estate bubble to crash in India, and especially in Chennai.

In a 4 storey building with a 20 feet approach road, a 3BHk with carpet 900 sqft (super built up 1400 sqft) is being quoted at ₹2.3Cr inclusive everything.

The audacity of the sales person to say “just ₹2.3Cr” got me fuming, asking him what I’m getting for that amount.

It doesn’t even have space for a fire engine to come in easily.

People should realise to not pledge their life to the bank, by buying such mediocre properties. It’s better to put the foot down saying, there’s no value in the project and I’m not gonna shell out a bomb for this sh*t.

There needs to be a @VishalBhargava5 for the Chennai market.

1. The plane carrying the president is both symbolically and legally the center of US government. It is no different than the White House.

2. On that plane, the Commander In Chief can start a nuclear war.

3. No university president can conduct a nuclear war from their office. They can’t even fire a professor.

4. A president has ability to direct billions in aid, military support, trade to another country. Just ask Donald Trump.

5. A university does not have the power to admit a single foreign student on their campus without government approval.

6. What is the University of Alabama going to do for Qatar in exchange for donations ? Give them good seats to the Iron Bowl?

This is silly. Why do you embarrass yourself asking rhetorical questions that would disqualify an intern applying for a job at Pershing Square?
