A Zimbabwean-American Michelle Netsai Butler has announced a historic run for Justice of the Peace
in Denton County, Texas, United States.
A Justice of the Peace (JP) is a local judge responsible for overseeing minor civil cases, witnessing
and certifying legal documents, administering oaths, officiating marriages, and mediating
community disputes.
JPs play a critical role in making the justice system accessible and fair for all members of the community.
Butler brings extensive experience in civic engagement and electoral politics.
Butler, a seasoned community organiser, says she is proudly Zimbabwean-American and would like to serve her community and contribute to its development.
If elected to public office, Butler would make history as the first Black Zimbabwean-American to achieve that in the US where immigrants are making it big into influential public offices.
Only recently, a Ugandan-American Zohran Mamdani was elected Mayor of New York.
He will officially assume his new role on January 1, 2026.
Son of prominent Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani,
Zohran is a Democratic socialist who ran on a platform focused on affordability and will be the city's first Muslim and South Asian mayor, as well as its youngest in over a century.
Butler wants to write her own piece of history.
Already she some experience on community mobilisation. She has worked on multiple presidential campaigns, including Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Elizabeth Warren, focusing on voter access, mail-in ballot campaigns, and protecting the integrity of democracy.
In addition to campaign work, she has engaged in policy advocacy, particularly around voting
rights, election integrity, and equitable access to justice for marginalized communities.
“I am running to ensure that every voice in our community is heard and counted,” Butler said.
“Our courts should be a place where justice is fair, accessible, and reflective of the people they
serve.
My work on presidential campaigns and in policy has taught me the importance of combining community engagement with systemic change, and I am bringing that approach to JP6B.”
Butler’s candidacy marks a milestone for Denton County and serves as an inspiration
for other Zimbabweans abroad who want to contribute to the civic life of their communities.
