As a 5 year DeFi veteran and ex-lead of a >1B TVL DeFi protocol, I've been increasingly discouraged by the lack of diversity in DeFi breakthroughs. There is too much "wrap/deposit this asset for another layer of gov token yield" DeFi masturbation in this cycle. DeFi cannot just stop at this. As builders, we must break new ground as DeFi did during DeFi Summer szn.

IP is the next new major ground for DeFi to financialize. It is already a US$61T asset class of intangible assets, covering every intangible creation of the human intellect. It's a colossal market purely by asset size and variety. IP will be behind a true DeFi renaissance, and is already the underlying theme in every major narrative of this cycle: AI, memes, and RWAs.

Additionally, IP assetization isn't competing directly with any competent standards in TradFi designed for intangible assets, allowing an easier path to mass adoption. In contrast,

• Bitcoin competes with gold and money as the standard for store and transfer of value.
• Blockchain L1s/L2s compete with centralized computational platforms as the standard for executing transactions and events.
• DeFi tokens compete with equities, debt, financial derivatives and tradfi institutions as financialization standards of tangible monetary value.

What is the financial instrument in web2 that competes with tokenized IP? Legal documents. US IP value captured in documentation alone is estimated at $7.8T and includes patents, trademarks and copyrights across tech, healthcare, manufacturing, entertainment and other industries. Groundbreaking drug invention? IP in a legal document. Generalized AI models capable of doing economic work? IP in a legal document. Global hit song popular everywhere? IP in a legal document. You get the idea.

Legal documents hold all the rights and value creation mechanisms of individual IPs, but it operates on a super inefficient P2P basis. To monetize an IP once, 2 groups of people/companies and their lawyers manually agree a custom financial scheme to deploy the IP, and monetize it no more than is written in that contract. Once that's done, nobody else can create value until another contract for another situation is manually agreed. Story is going to tokenize IP and change the P2P nature of legal contracts into a P2Everyone environment where any single IP asset can always be open for anyone to monetize at all times. Story is not competing with legal documents. It's building a superior, open model of financialization of IP value that includes more IPs than the current web2 system, improves individual IP utilization and efficiently directs more capital into IP value creation.

Since Story improves (and not competes) on the current P2P mechanism which the US$61T IP asset class currently uses, I believe it will pick up very quickly. I'm very bullish, and that's why I'm spending all my time building IPFi. IPFi is the superior standard and ecosystem for IP value capture, distribution and financialization.
