@DavidDack Even when I was at my best (sub-16 minute 5K), my runs were punctuated by brief walks, especially long runs. While it's common to see guys jogging in place at stoplights, I'd calmly wait until the light changed.
@taggartvanetten My training partners and I held a "Ball & Chain 5 Mile Run" the morning of our wedding. It ended up being a 10K.
33 years later my team calls her "Mrs. Coach."
@HFJumps The State meet standard is the average of the 9th place finish from the previous 3 years.
It's also known as the "3 participant standard". If you have 3 guys that eclipse the standard during the regular season, you can enter all 3 in the state tournament. Normally it's only 2.
@HFJumps We're seeing that here in single-class Indiana, as well, where 38 guys hit the auto qualifying standard in the 100m (10.97). Normally there are 24 auto- qualifiers plus 3 at-large. This year they expanded the field with 3 add'l at-large spots. State finals track has 10-lanes.
@Siemers_XC_TF You never know what those freshmen will turn into. You can only provide the direction.
The 18:30 freshman I had 3 years ago turned into a 15:13 monster. We added one of his classmates the next year. He went 15:24. The next year we added a freshman who ran 16:01 last fall.
@uhstrack@stevemagness Daniels said Ryan's coach also coached swimming and the workouts resembled swimming workouts - repeats in 3 minute waves. The faster you were the more recovery you got which sucked if you were slow.
Ryan's 400's were roughly at threshold pace.
@rbright@teachthemx3 I'm 64 and haven't had that one in a long while but one of my old nightmares was forgetting the combination to my dormitory post office box. Another was showing up for a final while wearing only a too small bath robe.
My wife's nightmare was going to the wrong room for finals.
@pntrack Team warmup, indeed. That's a throwback to when I was in HS a long time ago. It was entertaining to see the throwers run a lap - or two!
Some of the worst "best practices" I've seen come from 2 places - middle school and guys unconsciously repeating what they did in HS.
@pntrack We did something like that back in the day except it was down and back four times in 40 seconds. The all-time record was 32 seconds by my older brother. I did it in 33 - but I was a "distance" guy.
@CoachMarcusHill Attendance on prom day isn't the hill I choose to die on. As a track coach, I try not to schedule meets that day. I recognize it's an all-day event for the girls, Starting at 7, :30 a.m. They check out a couple days earlier.
OTOH, the boys usually attend and perform well.
@dandakich@CoachLLRD Met @bobkevoian & Tom shortly after they arrived back in '83. They were the featured guests at an Indy 5K/ 10K road race. I was a college student/athlete and didn't know who they were. Figured that out later.
@Simon_Ingari Similar experience w/ a company-supplied pager. Left my cell in my car overnight while attending a huge out-of-town 5K.
7 missed calls & VM from my boss wanting to know why I didn't answer.
Called him back ➡️"had the pager turned on & with me entire time no one paged me."
