NASA has released one of the most detailed visualizations ever created of Earth’s ocean currents.

The owner removed all menu prices and ran a donation-based model to fight food insecurity and local immigration enforcement surges.

The results:

• 85% of customers were either homeless and/or addicts

• Served over 30,000 free meals funded by community donations over six months

• The model ultimately proved unsustainable, forcing a pause due to burnout and financial strain

It really seems to me that the "content creation" treadmill ultimately arcs toward every square inch of America getting "discovered."

The process is:

1. A place with character exists, unknown to the world
2. Some influencer goes there, films it
3. Gets 1M views
4. The place, being hitherto in no way limited to a caricaturized version of itself, is now pigeonholed into a particular schtick, or aesthetic, or idea
5. Locals become aware of this, they know that they have finally become 'known' in the all-seeing eye of the internet, they take a certain amount of pride in this (or are rankled at it)
6. Non-locals visit, do Zillow searches, move there, it's "found" by the Airbnb-type economy
7. The place is now "connected" in the digital-neural network, it is conquered territory
8. The place, because of this process, becomes "less real," the Monoculture percolates into it
9. Once this process occurs on an intensive enough level, whatever gave the place character can no longer be produced locally without it being somewhat self-aware and therefore less genuine.

And so we see that "realness" or "authenticity" is just a natural resource to be strip-mined; and like most strip-minable resources, it is only generally mined by non-locals, foreigners, outsiders. The jury's out on whether it's a non-renewable resource or not, but by my eye, the more the internet touches a place, the more that generative realness is less and less possible there.

It genuinely harrows me to think that I have been a handmaiden to this process.

Using FSD is far safer than driving manually, as measured over 12 billion miles of its use. Safer by a margin of 2x the miles between collisions!
