@Shoeless__Joe@stopeatingfaces@PhoenixGolf55@ByMattWeyrich You're highlighting the crux of this debate, which is "when did the tag attempt begin" but it sure as shit isn't that. I know there's no defined criteria on what an attempt is, but you'd think initially being within reach of the baserunner would be a good place to start, no?
@BradIsCanadian@andy_k121@CodifyBaseball@Jbitty1934 I wouldn't say idiots but many don't understand the rule and the debate truly is around whether a sincere tag attempt was made and when it started which is umpire discretion. I think the right call was made, and would still agree if the teams were reversed.
@ChipsPicks_@CodifyBaseball A runner is entitled to run to Antarctica if they feel like it. Looking at a guy and sticking your glove out half assed because you've decided they're too far away to chase means the runner has already moved and established an alternate basepath.
@YeahImOldaf@ChrisChantrey33@Jbitty1934@CodifyBaseball EC already moved to the right (GH's left) prior to a legitimate tag attempt being made as GH simply moving toward EC does not automatically imply a tag attempt. Once an attempt was initiated, EC did not move 3+ feet from the direct line established at that point. Correct call.
@Whosnext10b@prophecyghxost@CodifyBaseball@Jbitty1934 No it isn't. A defender running toward you is not what "making a tag attempt" is. The runner is within his rights to run wherever the hell he wants to until a tag attempt is made - at which time he has 3 feet of room to either side of the line he is on at that point.
@andy_k121@CodifyBaseball@Jbitty1934 This image represents the half-hearted, tenth of a second attempt that was made to tag Ernie out, in which he has already established a baseline to Henderson's left, and Ernie does not veer another three feet from that point to be deemed out of the basepath. Umpires are correct.
@roberttbrown@Damon98_ Some people would likely relish that. He isn't cutting the mustard right now, that's for sure. Can't seem to ketchup with major league pitching.
@jamesbond76@JustBB_Media Hmmm... perhaps we should all wait for Don to manage a game or two for the Phillies before we even start to think about assessing anything.
@SteveStrife@HaloTerritory 5% correct. MLB used to measure pitch speed at the plate but that was obsolete about a decade prior to Salmon playing in the majors, so he's kind of full of shit.
The difference in tech between his era and now is about 2-3 mph, AND far more pitchers today throw harder than ever.
@BluejayGreek@n4stradamus@HayesTSN Absolutely. That isn't just your opinion, that is objectively true based on the stats so far. The guy has struck out half the batters he has faced and been let down twice by his defense.
@Captain_C2@JoeEvan14@bulldog1205@PitchingNinja Yes, of course. But now we're talking about scale. I would consider anyone playing in the majors as being one of the best in the world.
Anyway, I wasn't trying to be a dick, I was more trying to emphasize your point that hitting a baseball is fucking hard.
@JoeEvan14@Captain_C2@bulldog1205@PitchingNinja How am I being a douche? I said I presumed he was referring to getting hits, and my point was 30% is being generous given almost nobody manages to hit .300 nowadays.
Only 7 players achieved that in 2024, and 2025, with Aaron Judge being the only one to achieve it in both years.
@redmiler13@HayesTSN 2024 to now:
Moreno - 4.1 fWAR in 187 games
Varsho - 7.6 fWAR in 214 games
Also, remember on Nov 1 2025 when the Jays nearly won a World Series championship?
Thanks, Ross!
@Captain_C2@bulldog1205@PitchingNinja Hitting it (making contact), and getting a hit are very different things.
I presume you're talking about getting a hit. If so, I wouldn't even say it's 30% anymore.
Last season, only seven qualified players hit .300
If you did simply mean making contact, then 30% is horrible.
@JonathanBaumst4@aaron_stock@AbstractDodgers@JustinPearson5@velouniversity@hubermanlab Did you read the study?
After the 4 minute icing, pitchers would warm the arm up again.
My question is how long is that process? What happens if your offense is retired quickly? Does the pitcher even have sufficient time to warm back up, otherwise, risk injury?
@TOSportsNut@ShiDavidi Could be a bullpen day but they're getting absolutely wiped in the early going here. Possible replacements are Lazaro Estrada or Adam Macko but not sure how stretched out they are and how much length they'd be able to provide initially.
