As a complete outsider, the software world appears to be a mix of “this is so cool and valuable, we should make sure it’s 100% free for everyone” and “we have found a business that has potentially infinite margin and we should make sure we get as close ♾️ as possible.”

These things just appear to live side by side with complete opposite ideological perspectives and there seems to be effectively zero people taking up any kind of middle ground.

I know I’m a dumbass, but it does seem a little weird!!

They decided to push it out to every device with their software on it.

@LoboSol64560689 @tsoding It's actually pretty good as well! I used to use lazyvim, but now I'm using one from scratch.

For mason, I just didn't tell it to install anything, and put all the binaries I need in programs.neovim.extraPackages so they're available from neovim.

@vicjajsalu2 @plsgetbag @tsoding I used to be an arch believer for so long, then I tried NixOS and holy shit I'm now enlightened. I'm writing nix modules, contributing to nixpkgs, distributing software via flakes, and have all my machines configured with a flake that handles everything + CI/CD for deploys.

@LoboSol64560689 @tsoding NixOS is perfect - once it clicks for you. It took me a second to really get it, but after a month or two of using nix (home-manager) on arch, I moved all of my machines over to it. It's exactly what I want it to be.

@yannschmidtart @AstraKernel @tsoding This is exactly my path as well (except swap manjaro with garuda, and put vanilla arch after endeavour again).

NixOS is now perfect. I can't imagine switching away from it now. I've moved everything over to it, and it's so perfect for everything I need.
