it’s said to be most effective when one needs to put real effort into not getting out and is uncertain they will be able to handle it, so I wouldn’t call it fully predicted at the outset or devoid of learning. agree that transfer is the key here and should serve as a normative guide for what kinds of activities people ought to focus on, as most aren’t planning to race the Iditerod anytime soon
fair enough, I grew up in New Hampshire. but i can tell you from my own experience there is something real here. it may not be specific to cold plunges, but it's the idea of training one's mind to not immediately react to very unpleasant sensations. cold plunges are a highly concentrated way to do that. it seems to transfer to other areas of life in that it lessens resistance to predicted uncomfortable or uncertain situations and mitigates desires to default to doing things just because they feel good. in simpler terms, it makes one less of a pussy. which is a great direction to go in for most people. needs to be studied more.
If AI is conscious, does that mean my old TI-89 Plus Silver Edition is a "little bit" conscious? Like an ant would be to an elephant or gorilla? It also performs computations, just on a much smaller scale. If not, what is it about the nature of LLM computations to which we ascribe consciousness?
The goal of education in each century:
1st century - The cultivation of virtue
5th century - The cultivation of virtue
9th century - The cultivation of virtue
14th century - The cultivation of virtue
19th century - The cultivation of virtue
21st century - College and Career Readiness 🤦♂️
@drgurner there's a time for exploration, and a time for focus. often our initial visions will be highly misguided and unconsciously driven by society's influences, not what will make us happy.
@jhong the easiest explanation is missing - AI does all the homework easily so people don't actually learn the material, and then they bomb the in-person exams
@tomieinlove it's precisely because they're using AI as a homework machine that they're failing the exams. final grade is mostly based on in-person exams.
@Smuckerdoodle6@katherineveritt I don’t see how it can be meaningfully regulated. Very powerful models are now open source. People can just run a model on their own laptop. Trying to kill it will just make all the benefits accrue even more unevenly to the tech-literate.
