💡We are in a time of technological hyper-acceleration heading toward the light limit!
🫂So take heart @DeryaTR, you're not alone. The pace of change in this #DecadeOfDiscovery is overwhelming and will fundamentally change every element of global reality -- medicine, geopolitics, culture, industry -- by 2040 ... or ealier.
📚 A rummage through my special sci-fi/futurist geek-out bookcase reveals that fiction and non-fiction writers foresaw this over the last century (the subject of my forthcoming essay on @Medium in mid-April).
👇These clairvoyants of our ⏭️ future include ...
- H.G. Wells The Shape of Things to Come (1933) and his 'world brain ' concept
- Buckminster Fuller's Nine Chains to the Moon (1938) and 'ephemeralization ', essentially "Moore's Law"
- John Von Neuman's 1940s work on 'self-replicating automata ' with tech change outpacing biological evolution
- Norbert Weiner's (1948) principle of 'recursive improvement '
- Isaac Asimov's original three-volume Foundation Series (1951-1953) concept of 'psychohistory ', mathematical modeling of societal changes that implicitly relied on accelerating technological forces, and his prophetic essay, "The Gods Themselves" (1964), posits tech momentum outpacing ethical frameworks, creating 'progress traps '
- Stanislaw Lem's Solaris (1961) exploration of 'technological autopoiesis ', systems capable of self-directed evolution
- Arthur C. Clarke Profiles of the Future (1962) teased out non-linear (through his allusions to magic) perceptions of tech acceleration
- Alvin Toffler's Future Shock (1970) concepts of 'accelerative thrust ' and 'adaptive breakdowns ' are still relevant a half-century later
- Vernon Vinge's Fire Upon the Deep (1982) and Marooned In Real Time (1986) laid the groundwork for his "The Coming Technological Singularity" (1993) essay on the fusion of AI, biotech, and nanotech
- William Gibson's Neuromancer (1984) and the 'matrix ', where biotech, infotech, and neurotech converge and create vectors of change that outpace legal & social frameworks
- K. Eric Drexler's Engines of Creation (1986) with future nanotech manipulation at the atomic level driving an 'intelligence explosion '
- Hans Moravec's Mind Children (1988) with projected robotics development with AI passing biological intelligence by 2040
- Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash (1992) with competing corporate nano-ecologies where protocol layers determine the pace of innovation and introduces us to the 'multiverse '
- Ray Kurzweil's "The Law of Accelerating Returns" (1999) and his books The Singularity is Near (2005) and The Singularity is Nearer (2024)
- Juan Enriquez' As The Future Catches You (2001) and the genetics revolution
And a host of recent books by @azeem - The Exponential Age (2021), @mustafasuleyman - The Coming Wave (2023), and @JamieMetzl - Superconvergence (2024).
All these amazing books, be they general commentary, science/speculative fiction, or domain-specific non-fiction, help us make sense of three systemic trends happening now and into the multiple futures we can shape:
1⃣ Recursive Feedback ... each new tech platform (semiconductors, AI, quantum computing) enables faster development of the next platform(s);
2⃣ Convergence Catalysts ... new breakthroughs occur at tech intersections (IT, biology, neurotech, materials science, nanotech, etc); and
3⃣ Adaptive Tensions ... exponential tech growth consistently outpaces legal, ethical, and cognitive frameworks: now harken back to Von Neuman, Asimov, Clark, Toffler, Gibson et al).
