Yn wir, I am ashamed of my Alma Mater Prifysgol Bangor today.
The glory of our Western civilisation lay in hearing opinions we disagree with, rather than priggish silos of conformity.

'Anxiety is the vertigo of freedom', not a mental health condition.
Stop telling young people they are ill if they feel anxiety.
Deal with it, ideally learn to embrace it.

@Chuz_Life@Docstockk Of course it's of value to them but that does not necessarily make it of moral value in itself? I agree a human zygote is a human being but is it yet in any way a person, a being with morally relevant characteristics? It's a potential person, therefore not yet an actual person.
The #ethics of #abortion explored in my book #HowToBeGood.
A human #foetus is not morally relevant by virtue of being HUMAN (that's speciesism), but becomes morally relevant around 24 weeks by virtue of becoming a PERSON.

@Chuz_Life@Docstockk Characteristics that give x moral value. The more it has the more it is worthy of moral consideration. List here from #HowToBeGood p 146.
@NathanNobis@Docstockk I'll take a look at that. A while since I wrote about these issues. I chose abortion & animal rights as topics for the applied ethics chapter of #HowToBeGood, an intro to ethics and being ethical. Along with euthanasia they are often taught together as rights to life and death.
@NathanNobis@Docstockk I take back the word 'complex'. I think I just had in mind the 'tricky' position people are placed in when the idea of non human persons exposes their moral inconsistencies. Singer mentions pro-lifers who happily eat steak for example.
@NathanNobis@Docstockk Singer's human/person distinction simplifies the abortion issue. It shortcuts pro life and pro choice, making it all about the personhood moral relevance of the fetus at x age as compared with that of the mother.
Factoring personhood kind of makes animal rights more complex.
@BioethicsUK@Docstockk Limited of course, far less of a person than a pig, but some capacity to feel and suffer, which is why 24 weeks is often the line.
I was influenced by Singer's distinction between human and person, moral relevance pertaining to personhood not species membership.
