My 5c worth: a diverse and inclusive community is supposed to enable all people to belong despite our differences, and all become stronger because of them. If we're going to get selective about which differences are OK, then it feels like we've missed the point.
Hey @Spotify here’s a bug for you, I’ll let you figure out how to reproduce it because I’ve only got 280 characters here 🤷🏼♀️ . Also, since you’re a zillion dollar software company, can you please lead our industry back to the noughties, when we allowed users to report bugs. Ta!
@ZiggyTheHamster@john_tipper@QuinnyPig Every function call is passed through to an underlying node.js process. Even constants are passed through. Even the *types* come from TypeScript (integer constants as float, anyone??!). Effectively, all CDK development is in TypeScript, even when you think it’s another language.
@jsaltr It goes without saying that Microsoft are the Zerg. As for the others, i think you could make a good argument for AWS being Terran, and Google as Protoss also kinda works
Choosing a #cloud provider is like playing Starcraft. There's 3 main choices with their own pros and cons to suit your style, along with accompanying fanbase and famous players. But at the end of the day we're all just happy to be playing the game.
@developerjack@r1chardj0n3s@freakboy3742 I got called by a market research company this week. How is it a legitimate business model in 2021 to ring up strangers and ask them personal questions for half an hour?
(They are probably valid, i just feel we should be training people to not give PII to unverified callers)
Great reality check here, the real world is messy :-(. I once had a similar situation (to a lesser degree), where my house had 2 addresses [*]. This seems to be far less problematic in Australia for some reason, once we had connected the electricity it never caused issues
Here's a piece of information that will send a chill down the spine of anyone who's ever designed a database schema:
Our new house that we just moved into... has two zip codes!
@c_tolkien @jamescmcpherson @BunkyFob@simonw I read years ago about 2 people who met online trying to meet up IRL at Richmond train station, and couldn't find each other due to being 900km apart. Gotta love it.
This is what you get when you cancel your @Zoom account. What message does this unnecessarily send to the customer?
1. The way to get a better deal is to be a bad customer (and leave)
2. This provider talks down to me and doesnt respect my decisions ("I don't like savings")

@sdm___12 Nice, i have started doing that too :) Do you have any system to mark them as "compliment" rather than "needs action", so that it's easy to tell where a PR is up to? Or do ppl just figure it out ?
I feel like code review systems are biased toward treating all comments as critical feedback, and surfacing them for action. Sometimes i just want to say "Good one :-)"
Just to clarify, i am not bemoaning that tech workers are underpaid (far from it). But the discussion around sponsored visas in our industry sounds remarkably similar to this one in the fruit picking industry.
"Critical labour shortages are forcing Queensland farmers to pay higher wages and provide better conditions to attract local workers.". Maybe tech companies could try this approach too...
@JamesTechRec It seems to be quite a common strategy out my way. You're gonna get insects, so you may as well choose which ones you like - especially spiders! I've invested in Daddy Long Legs, they're no good with roaches but at least they don't freak me out
@evolvable The golden rule about CI tools is that they all have some unspeakable deficiency. So spend a few hours on each trying to build up your primary pipeline, and run with the one that provided the least friction on that task :) Also, consider Github Actions if your code is on Github
