Cold exposure could help promote sleep by enhancing parasympathetic activity—but the timing is crucial.
Immediately after cold exposure you get a rush of sympathetic drive. That's why it makes you feel awake and alert. But in the ensuing hours you’ll see a massive down regulation, potentially as much as a 20–60% increase in HRV. This will help, rather than hinder, sleep onset and quality.
So while some will recommend a warm bath or a shower soon before bed, a properly timed cold exposure may be even better. My husband swears by it.
