🇱🇸This week in Lesotho, @IAEAorg is reviewing progress under the technical cooperation programme and discussing priorities to enhance the use of nuclear science with the Ministers of Energy and Mining, Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, Health and Environment and Forestry.
🇧🇼During an @IAEAorg visit to Botswana, the country’s achievements through long-standing collaboration with the IAEA technical cooperation programme were highlighted, including advances in cancer care, animal health and production, crop improvement, and zoonotic disease control.
This week at @IAEAorg, experts are working to establish a framework for developing human capital for Africa’s emerging nuclear power programmes that includes a variety of components, from university programmes and digital learning to regional centres of excellence and fellowships
🇸🇳Last week, @IAEAorg discussed strengthening the IAEA technical cooperation programme in Senegal and advancing collaboration under @AFRAAfrica with @Boubacarcamou, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and @Dribrahimasy72, Minister of Health and Public Hygiene.
The Regional Meeting on Applied Nuclear Science for Agriculture concluded successfully today in Dakar, Senegal. Discussions focused on strengthening partnerships between academia & Agricultural Research Systems to drive innovation and build sustainable food systems across Africa.
Necsa together with the @DOEE_ZA hosted @iaeaorg Acting Director, Mr Gashaw Wolde, and Programme Management Officer, Mr Michel Warnau. This forms part of their visit to South Africa for Technical Cooperation Africa.
Across Africa, scientists are turning data into action to protect vital water resources.
With support from IAEA, experts have analysed over 20,000 water samples using nuclear techniques to better understand groundwater and prevent pollution.
The results are already shaping national water management plans, strengthening access to clean water and supporting long-term sustainability across the continent.

An intensive and highly productive week at #NEISA2026 in Kigali Rwanda. Honoured to accompany the IAEA Director General on key events & contribute to important discussions on advancing nuclear energy cooperation across Africa. Congrts to Rwanda & partners on a successful event.
I’m in Kigali, Rwanda, where I just spoke at the opening of @NEISAfrica’s Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa #NEISA2026, together with 🇷🇼 President @PaulKagame, 🇹🇿 President @SuluhuSamia, and 🇹🇬 President @FEGnassingbe.
Africa needs more energy, with around 600 million people still lacking access to electricity. The interest in nuclear power is real: about half of all @IAEAorg newcomer countries are African, and 13 are actively pursuing nuclear power programmes.
Rwanda specifically is among the countries looking to nuclear energy as part of the solution, with plans for nuclear to contribute more than 60% of its energy mix by 2050. I handed over to President @PaulKagame the Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR), a report by the IAEA that assesses the country’s progress in developing the infrastructure needed for a safe and secure and sustainable nuclear power programme.
Africa’s energy future will be built by Africans, and the IAEA is ready to continue supporting countries across the continent, from infrastructure development and capacity building to new technologies such as SMRs. Recent agreements between the IAEA and financial institutions such as the @WorldBankGroup will be key in turning ambition into reality.
Thanks to @RAEB_Rwanda President @SinaZerbo for organising #NEISA2026 and this important conversation on Africa’s energy future.
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said nuclear energy is key to driving Africa’s development.
“The issue of energy, energy security, and how we support every country to access energy has clearly become the foundation for supporting development, especially here on the African continent.”

Important step forward for Rwanda’s nuclear energy plans.
Together with @RwandaInfra’s @Dr_JimmyGasore, signed an @IAEAorg/@RwandaGov agreement to strengthen cooperation on integrating nuclear energy into Rwanda’s energy mix, including SMRs.
The agreement covers support on energy planning, infrastructure development, training, stakeholder engagement, financing and capacity building as 🇷🇼 moves forward with its plans.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame met on Tuesday with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi in Kigali. The two discussed #Rwanda's ambition to develop nuclear power, which it hopes will supply 60% to 70% of its energy mix.

Tanzania is a long-standing partner of the @IAEAorg, from the successful use of the Sterile Insect Technique in Zanzibar to expanding cancer care through #RaysOfHope and food security through #Atoms4Food.
Excellent meeting with President @SuluhuSamia on the margins of #NEISA2026 in Kigali, where we exchanged on these topics, as well as 🇹🇿’s plans to develop nuclear power infrastructure, which the IAEA stands ready to support every step of the way.
In Zimbabwe, @IAEAorg conducted a high-level visit to the new centralized disused radioactive sources facility of the Radiation Protection Authority with Deputy Chief Secretary Churu from the Office of the President and Cabinet.
🇿🇼This week, @IAEAorg joined Minister of Energy July Gabarari Moyo in Harare for a workshop on establishing a Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organization (NEPIO) in Zimbabwe.
