Megha is a Heuglin’s Gull who was satellite-tagged in Mannar, Sri Lanka, in 2021 April.
We are excited to tell you Megha is the first known bird to travel to the high Arctic from Sri Lanka!
Megha's first complete journey in 2021, from Mannar to the Yamal peninsula of the Arctic & back to Peninsular India, encompassed an astounding distance of 24,000km. We wish Megha and bird migration science all the best! @BNHSIndia
Today is World Migratory Bird Day, a day meant to commemorate the wonder that our migrant birds carry around in their astounding annual journeys! https://t.co/7nxroCrYYl
‘Sherpa Tenzing’, our second-tagged Brown-headed Gull from Sri Lanka, flew over the Himalayas at 7600m (24,930 feet), just 20km west of Mt. Everest, on his way to his breeding grounds in the Tibetan plateau, on 18th May 2022! #CentralAsianFlyway https://t.co/VU3e4Xwdh2
‘Guardians of Birds – Mannar’ is a series of school programs that we, Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka conduct in colloboration with Oriental Bird Club & Palmyrah House, Mannar, to raise the awareness of children on Mannar's importance for migratory birds.
Eastern Yellow Wagtail - not Western - is the predominant species in #SriLanka in non-breeding season. See our recent paper @online_BOC here https://t.co/9rMAXndFeP and info slides for those birding in Sri Lanka. Great work also on this now in India too @indianBIRDSJrnl
@capdevila_jesu We have recently uncovered very similar routes from the tagged Heuglin's Gulls in South Asia. It would be interesting to learn more!!
