Replying to an MP who points out that 32 UK organisations funding Israeli war crimes against the Palestinians enjoy charitable status, the Charity Commission says it "needs time to consider the matter fully".

Charitable status means we, as British taxpayers, effectively subsidise Jewish settler militias – the kind that you see beating up Palestinian families with crowbars.

The Commission is lying about needing more time. It's had decades already. The JNF, the best-known and largest body raising funds for Israel, has long been involved in criminal conspiracies against the Palestinian people. I've been reporting on this for at least two decades. I'll link to an article I wrote on this very issue seven years ago in the reply post.

The Commission has resisted every attempt to overturn the JNF's charitable status.

Canada's equivalent commission has been braver, and ended the JNF's status.

The UK Charity Commission, by contrast, is just another way the British government launders money to subsidise Israel's criminal, and increasingly genocidal, activities.

Lebanon's internal displacement rate is now 22.6 percent — more than one in five of its people. Over 1.2 million people, including 350,000 children, have been forced from their homes, with the IDF launching more than 1,840 attacks on Lebanon since March 2, killing more than 1,497 people and injuring more than 4,639.

Moreover, the language used by Israel Katz to describe his aims in Southern Lebanon is extraordinarily explicit and self-incriminating. He has confirmed that Israel's military would establish a permanent "security zone" inside Lebanon up to the Litani River, that hundreds of thousands of displaced residents would be "completely prevented" from returning, and that "all the houses in the villages adjacent to the border in Lebanon will be demolished in accordance with the Rafah and Beit Hanoun model in Gaza."

The targeting of civilians for displacement specifically identified by their religion (Shia), combined with the destruction of their homes to prevent return, combined with the explicit statement that they will not be permitted to return — these are precisely the elements that international law identifies as forcible transfer and ethnic cleansing. Human Rights Watch has said that "the displacement of the Shia population looks less like a temporary military necessity and more like a move to permanently displace the civilian population based on their religion."

Its not complex, Adam. You just haven't got the balls to say it straight, and that failure makes your reportage worse than worthless. It makes it morally bankrupt.

Israel has turned its prisons into a network of torture camps for Palestinians. Prisoners are subjected to severe violence, deliberate humiliation, starvation, sleep deprivation, denial of medical care and abuse in everyfacility they are held in. Some have also been severely sexually assaulted. Since October 2023, at least 84 Palestinians have died in these torture camps.

The policymakers, and primarily Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir, brag in TV puff pieces and on social media about what is happening in these torture camps.

Today, we published “Living Hell”, a report on the situation of Palestinians in Israeli custody. It is based on the testimonies of Palestinians released in recent months, along with research, reports, news updates and Israel Prison Service figures, and continues our previous report on the issue, “Welcome to Hell”, from August 2024.

Systematic, deliberate abuse continues to define Israel’s policy toward Palestinian prisoners in its custody, and is another feature of the Israeli regime’s coordinated onslaught on the Palestinian people.

This attempt at deflection and minimising won't work. The line is to frame Ben Gvir as a fringe figure but he remains a member of the Government. But consider this. Also present , endorsing the open torture of activists , was Miri Regev, Transport Minister. She is a Senior member of Likud, previously highly placed on its national list at elections and mentioned as a potential successor to Netanyahu. The Problem for @_LFI and other allies of Israel is not the torture of activists but that it is done openly and is therefore appalling PR. It is the naked face of the Israeli regime being exposed. Regev , as I say a senior Likud figure, was one of those who supported the Israeli Prison guards who were filmed sexually abusing a Palestinian prisoner. The Israeli political mainstream has no problem with the abuse and torture of Palestininian prisoners. Nobody should be fooled: Ben-Gvir is not a bad apple – he is a product of an apartheid system.

The UN's Special Rapporteur on torture has just documented widespread, systematic abuse of Palestinian detainees.

The Special Rapporteur counted numerous incidents of torture and sexual violence, including, in her own words, 'mauling by dogs of their genitals.'

Palestinian detainees continue to face horrendous and systematic torture condoned not by one rogue minister, but from the top of Israeli politics.

If the UK government is genuinely appalled, it must:

- End all trade contributing to Israel's ongoing genocide, apartheid and unlawful occupation

- Enforce an immediate ban on all weapons transfers, military assistance and the import of goods from illegal settlements.

While the hundreds of Global Sumud Flotilla activists unlawfully detained by Israel are en route back to their countries, Palestinian prisoners will have to continue to endure unspeakable abuse.

Israel has a long history of incarcerating Palestinians without charge or trial. Its systematic use of administrative detention – detaining Palestinians without charge or trial - is a cornerstone of Israel’s system of #apartheid. Torture and other ill-treatment of Palestinian prisoners have been a cruel reality for decades and only increased in the last 3 years. Over 9,000 Palestinian men, women, and children are currently held in Israel’s prisons. More than a 1,000 are from Gaza and subjected to enforced disappearance or held incommunicado in military facilities and denied access to lawyers or contact with their families.

Amnesty International and other human rights groups have continuously documented a pattern of Israeli authorities inflicting torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment against Palestinians, including through the denial of medicine, food, clothing and sleep, continuous beating, cuffing and blindfolding, dog attacks, rape and other sexual violence, among other abuses. In yet another display of double standards, third states have remained unmoved to the repeated calls to act to bring an end to Israel’s abuses against Palestinians in custody. This must end.
