Let’s put it this way. If you are a thoughtful Christian, then the nature of God is extremely important to you. This is not just words, it is about a relationship with an actually existent being. So if the *sort* of being that you attach to words like “God” and “Jesus” is different from that which is worshipped by Christians, then Christians will naturally deny that you worship the same God.

This becomes more obvious if we change the example to a sports team. If you tell me you are a Buckeyes fan and that you watch them every year, but if by this you mean a certain seed, then I will conclude that you are not really a Buckeyes fan in the sense that anybody really cares about.

If the question is why this particular difference, the difference between Christian theology and Mormon theology, matters, then I might say this. Throughout the Old Testament, the Israelites are taken to task for worshipping multiple gods. This is the ultimate apostasy. One could go into why that is the case; suffice it to say that only God is holy. The ultimate sin, moreover, is pride, best exemplified when Adam and Eve eat the fruit in order to become like God. So when, thousands of years later, these uneducated upstarts say that there are millions of gods, and that we each may become a god, this strikes at the very root of biblical doctrine.

If a White boy had stabbed a Black boy in the heart at a school track meet, there would be nonstop marches in the streets, riots, viral outrage, and endless calls to ‘end racism.’
