The illusion of neutrality: "Scientists refraining from engaging with socio-political issues in a not-neutral world is not neutrality. It is a political position that avoids responsibility to society" https://t.co/hQv5tW75Wv
💥 New paper 💥
We discover a form of covert racism in LLMs that is triggered by dialect features alone, with massive harms for affected groups.
For example, GPT-4 is more likely to suggest that defendants be sentenced to death when they speak African American English.

"Is there evidence for the claim that humans have a Bayesian brain in the realist sense? No direct evidence has been presented to date. "

👉Language science has been ignoring the role feedback in language learning for too long!

If you teach Sensation & Perception and/or quantitative skills, have ever you thought to combine them? I have developed a practical module allowing to teach basics of psychophysics and computational modeling using a set of creative problem cases

Reposting in case one of you critical philosophy oriented attention/cog-psy geeks didn't see this. The positive comments were nice, but I'm still looking for criticisms!
This was an entertaining debate between @ylecun and the inimitable neuroscientist, Karl Friston:
https://t.co/JVSIObxfOa
I don't think their positions are very different in the end - in David Foster's wonderful Generative Learning book (2nd edn. [1]), there is a summary of how Friston and colleagues' learning algorithm based on the free energy principle [2] is quite close to the reinforcement learning methods used in today's computational #AI APIs that were gradually developed without strong allegiance to how the brain works. I think their positions are very close indeed, and the apparent melodramatic argument (saying things are "rubbish") was probably staged for media purposes and entertainment. It is like one is playing the Nimzo-Indian defense and the other is playing the English opening, but they are both playing chess, and the approaches they advocate will succeed to different degrees for different problems, and both are clearly successful approaches, both with a great and very promising future.
