This was me at 17. I left school that year and finished my studies in college instead because I refused to wear a school uniform (which was not required by law in Scotland but I'd get sent home regardless). I was really into indie sleaze, rave and the 80s. These were the days of Hadouken, MIA, Santigold and The Gossip. The days of Skins and Misfits. That'll give the millennials among you some context.

I wore eye make-up half the time, neon pink shoelaces in my hair, snakebites on my lips and chunky 80s gangsta chains. I never once thought of myself as anything other than a teenage boy and neither did anybody else. In my mind, it wasn't even anything to do with sexual orientation. In fact, I had a girlfriend at one point that year.

Growing up is about having less responsibilities in life and therefore more freedom to explore different things. None of it should be a permanent scar on your body should you abandon it. None of it should be made to dictate your identity forever.

I may not dress like this anymore but from every phase in my youth I kept something - with this one, the neons. The rest naturally went away because that's what happens when you're young, you're constantly changing. Imagine those shoe laces were forever sewn to my head with no way to remove them. Would I be happy? No.

Enjoy your youth. I don't cringe at any of the styles I adopted then and that surprises many but I honestly did and still do think I looked cool. But that's not the main reason I don't cringe - I don't cringe because these phases remind me of my ability to be free, have fun and not put myself in a prison of identity. I never caved in to peer pressure when it came to my style, either.

I still change aspects of my look all the time as I have always done and will probably always do. And I thank this kid for never turning that into a living nightmare. He was just having fun and not giving a fuck.

So do that. Stop giving a fuck. Stop giving a fuck about which pronouns people use for you, what you should or shouldn't be identifying as, what procedures you think will solve all your problems or make you feel part of something bigger than yourself and just have fun while you can. Be free. You have so little time to be truly free.
