No. 1: Change your intention from seeking agreements to fostering understanding.

Here is the rationale: Intention is the utmost fundamental building block in communication. It is a pivotal decision determining the foundation of the conversation. It is akin to choosing which direction you want to go, north or south. If a person intends to seek agreement, they lay the foundation for argumentation. But if they seek understanding they ensure they move toward dialogue.

Problem: Most people erroneously seek agreement. It is a tricky proposition as we all are uniquely different from oneanother. Hence, we tend to naturally disagree with each other. Seeking agreement is akin to wishful thinking, a quest for a fantasy that may come true. More often than not, seeking agreement leads the convresation partners on a path of frustration and agitation as the language (the only tool we have to communicate) does not do justice to fully convey the complexity of our inner world to others. The added frustration along with deficits in emotional regulation skills negatively impact the process of communication as partners get escalated quickly.

Solution: When we shift our attention away from seeking agreement to seeking understanding, something magical occurs. Even though this intention takes away the spectre of security ("agreements" are considered a good thing by most people), seeking understanding liberates us from the burden of having to worry about persuading others to agree with us or having to change our mind in order to agree with others. As it is commonly well known, worrying and fears limit our cognitive capacity to fully absorb information as they create a tunnel vision where we can only take in limited information. By intentionally wanting to only "understand" rather than "agree", we open our capacity to learn more information about the situation, the partner, and ourselves much more than we thought was possible. We start looking at the reality as is rather than our preconceived notions of what it might be or should be. In addition, seeking "understanding" helps us relax, feel more secure in the process, and regulate our feelings more competently as there is no pressure to concede or persuade. As the process becomes more manageable and enjoyable, our confidence rises, our reasoning improves, our curiosity and creativity are stimulated, and a positive feedback loop develops leading to the discovery of solutions that were hidden from plain sight earlier.
