@EddieComeaux@GlobalSportMtrs The NCAA has the responsibility to enforce standards that help fix the anti blackness rooted in the higher education system. The statistics are proof of anti blackness and they should give it acknowledgment and consider solutions that would help the lives of black student athletes
I didn’t find it surprised to learn during lecture about how student athletes tend to not be stem majors, the amount of time and energy playing sports takes does not allow them to do so @besavageee#ucr150
@nina_kobayashi_ @besavageee Playing sports is much more prioritized than being a student for college athletes. It’s sad to see but it’s the truth. The commercial and economic interest in college athletics is one of the reasons why athletes academic life isn’t prioritized #ucr150@besavageee
It’s unfortunate that student athletes sacrifice their education by having to miss class for games and it’s also unfortunate that student athletes are encouraged to stick with less demanding majors even if that’s not where there true academic interests are #ucr150@besavageee
The transfer rules just goes to show that being in a NCAA institution is in no way a compromise between two parties and only one party has a say in the guidelines and rules. It’s unfair that they make these rules to prevent student athlete transfers #ucr150@besavageee
@Egarcia150@besavageee I agree, it’s crazy! There should definitely be better protocols when it comes to the student athletes who put their health at risk for a sport. @besavageee#ucr150
I was very shocked to learn about how some concussions go unreported because student athletes don’t want to risk being replaced on a team #ucr150@besavageee
@LauraJThompson7@besavageee Yess!! I was glad to learn about the activism surrounding the issue in the past and it makes me interested in learning about what type of activism is happening today relating to the issue. #ucr150@besavageee
Although the implementation of title IX is a good step towards the right direction, there’s still room for improvement considering 80% of school are noncompliant. It needs to be enforced more in order to reach true equity. #ucr150@besavageee
@awatk011@besavageee I agree with you. It’s especially worrisome when the coaches who recruit the athletes are expected to no longer to be working for the school. #educ150
In this weeks readings I learned about the very short amount of time that prospective student athletes have to sign an NLI agreement, before a school moves on towards other directions. The pressure of making an important decision in 7 days is crazy. #ucr150@besavageee
@edie_carranza@besavageee It’s honestly upsetting that some student athletes face food insecurity. This gets me thinking whether potential student athletes are aware of the inequalities they might face when they do become a student athlete. @besavageee#ucr150
It’s very devastating to learn about the fact that if student athletes face a life long injury when playing a sport, they won’t receive medical coverage for it after their last renewable scholarship. #ucr150@besavageee
@GarroPoga001@besavageee I also was introduced to the purpose and value of the NCAA. I never considered all the possible issues that comes with being a student athlete.
This week I learned about the measures that student athletes took in order to reach self advocacy. Students have had to take measures such as threatening their schools to not play in a football game if they’re needs haven’t been met. @besavageee#ucr150
