Our newest paper is out in Science! This riddle took 5 years to solve. Genome annotation and AI missed it. Manual inspection and serendipity still have advantages for cracking nature's secrets! With @ScienceMagazine@EvolutionVU@RokasLab

@big_data_kane@yale_eeb @Jenn_Coughlan @TJNear Thank you Brandon! Was just incredible talking to you today. Hope our paths cross again in the near future.
Had a fantastic visit as the seminar speaker @yale_eeb ! Really stimulating conversations with such down to earth and creative people @Jenn_Coughlan @big_data_kane@TJNear thanks for the invite!
Our paper is out! w @HopkinsMedicine We explore how certain ACE2 mutations granting natural resistance to #SARSCoV2 infection will likely never evolve in humans (but maybe in dogs!)

Doomed by our physiology? @giannicast &co argue that, because of epistasis acting on #ACE2, ancient events in mammalian #cardiovascular evolution determined the host range of #SARSCoV2 millions of years before the current pandemic #PLOSBiology https://t.co/1c8QVj9c75
@LabDeNicola@LauredelaVega That's right! We (the authors) noticed in the literature that KEAP1 knockout mice die of keratin overexpression, and wondered how birds would handle it. We found antioxidant response elements at feather keratin loci in avian skin, and detected NRF2 occupancy!
Adaptation of the master antioxidant response connects metabolism, lifespan and feather development pathways in birds:

@giannicast
We found that #Birds have supercharged antioxidants! They lost the master off-switch controlling antioxidant gene expression. This is a major clinical target, which could explain why birds have such long lifespans. Thanks to @LightsOutBalt@NatureComms
