Stroppy short ginger bird, blessed with various chronic illnesses but still with a sense of humour. Huge Charlatans fan! Currently politically homeless...
Helen is a cow who has been blind since birth. She spent 19 years completely alone on a dairy farm, surrounded by nothing but four walls and silence. She had never felt the warmth of the sun, heard the wind, or had a friend.
On May 7, the day after her 19th birthday, Helen was rescued and taken to a sanctuary. At first, she stood perfectly still, listening carefully to every sound around her, trying to determine whether she was finally safe.
Her caregivers created a special space just for her, with a soft bed, gentle shade, and wind chimes hung throughout the pasture so she could navigate by sound. Over time, Helen learned to recognize the voices of the people caring for her. She gradually gained the confidence to step outside, explore her surroundings, and soon fell in love with a grooming brush near the entrance. Every evening, she would stand beneath the wind chimes, brush herself, and quietly listen to their gentle ringing.
One day, Helen slowly walked over to one of her caregivers, leaned her whole body against him, and gently licked his hand. It was her way of saying, โI trust you now.โ
Later, Margaret, a 17-year-old cow rescued from another dairy farm, arrived at the sanctuary. The two elderly ladies formed an immediate bond. Together with the rescue community, Helen and Margaret's own little โChรขteauโ was created, complete with fresh hay, cozy resting areas, grooming brushes, and wind chimes.
Helen also has a favorite song: the Hawaiian version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Whenever it begins to play, she lifts her face toward the sky and stands completely still, as if she has finally found the safe place she had been searching for all her life.
After 19 years surrounded by walls, Helen's world is now filled with warmth, kindness, and the gentle sound of wind chimes guiding her home โค๏ธ
456 PATIENTS DIED
This is one of the biggest medical scandals in British history and there is a decent chance you have never heard of it.
Between 1988 and 2000, patients admitted to Gosport War Memorial Hospital in Hampshire for things like hip fractures and chest infections were routinely put on syringe drivers pumping a steady stream of diamorphine, a powerful opioid. Many were not in pain. Most died within days of being hooked up.
Nurses noticed straight away. In 1988, staff on the Redclyffe Annexe told their managers something was badly wrong. They told their union, the Royal College of Nursing. They kept raising it for years. Management's response was to tell them to stop making waves.
The doctor overseeing the prescribing was Dr Jane Barton. In 2010 the General Medical Council @gmcuk found her guilty of serious professional misconduct in the care of 12 patients. She was not struck off. She retired instead, presumably somewhere with no syringe drivers.
3 separate police investigations by Hampshire Constabulary went absolutely nowhere across 3 decades. Zero prosecutions. Grieving families asking why their relatives died 5 days after routine surgery were treated as the problem.
Then in 2018, after a 4 year inquiry costing 14 million pounds, the Gosport Independent Panel confirmed what those nurses said in 1988.
456 patients died after being given opioids with no medical justification. The panel said probably 200 more died the same way, but their records had gone missing, because of course they had.
Kent Police @kent_police then launched Operation Magenta, reviewing over 750 patient records, taking 1200 witness statements and eventually naming 24 suspects. In November 2025, 7 years into that investigation and 37 years after the first nurse spoke up, police told the families of 101 patients there would be no charges. Their cases did not meet the evidential test. The rest remain under review, with the Crown Prosecution Service @CPSUK holding the final say on any charges, whenever that call finally comes.
So here is where things stand. A regulator confirmed the misconduct. A panel confirmed the cover-up. Nurses were proven right 30 years after the fact. And to this date, not one person has been prosecuted for any of the 456 deaths.
If you raise a concern about patient safety and get ignored for 3 decades, congratulations, you were right all along. Doesn't bring anyone back though.

This is Benji. He recently learned how to wiggle his toes. Not sure what to do with that yet, but a good skill to have in his back pocket just in case. 12/10
Everyone kept saying she'd eventually grow into those ears. But nearly two years later, those adorable oversized ears are still her signature feature and she's just as beautiful, perfect exactly the way she is. ๐๐
Boiled and grilled corn are the safest options for cats. Not only are they low in fat, but they keep most of the nutrients of natural corn.
While it's not recommended as regular food, it's a safe option as occasional treat.
And now Iโm here. The Coach and Horses pub near Syon Park in Brentford, London. Iโve only been here once before and Iโve come back today because itโs so beautiful inside and good service. BUTโฆalthough Iโd one hundred percent recommend coming here for a drink, Iโm hungry right now and thought a loaded fries would be perfect. Looked at the menu and itโs ยฃ29. Yes, ยฃ29 for a loaded fries. I have never, ever seen a price like that for those. So instead of them charging ยฃ15 and them making money and me being happy, theyโve made zero and Iโm starving. Anyway, come here for a drink because itโs a lovely place. Just make sure youโve eaten before you arrive.

This Australian's reply to Trump's rant about โNATO not being there for Americaโ is perfect.
"Mate. You run a country with 600,000 homeless people sleeping on the street tonight. A country where 40% of adults can't cover a $400 emergency without borrowing money. A country where insulin costs more than a car payment and people are rationing it to survive. A country where medical debt is the number 1 cause of bankruptcy. A country where women are dying in hospital car parks because doctors are too scared of abortion laws to treat a miscarriage.
You lock up more of your own citizens than any nation on earth. More than China. More than Russia. More than North Korea. The land of the free has 2 million people in cages, and a quarter of them haven't even been convicted of anything. They're just too poor to make bail.
Your life expectancy is going backwards. You're the only developed nation where that's happening. Your infant mortality rate is worse than Cuba's. Your kids do active shooter drills between maths and English while you sell the gunmaker's stock to your mates.
Your minimum wage hasn't moved in 15 years. You've got teachers working 2 jobs and veterans sleeping under bridges and you just spent a trillion dollars flattening a country that didn't attack you.
And youโve got a convicted felon, adjudicating raping, paedophile protecting, porn star shagging insurrectionist running the biggest dumpster fire war campaign since the Taliban thanked you very much for losing again.
And you're calling Greenland poorly run?
Greenland has universal healthcare. Free education. One of the lowest incarceration rates in the world. Nobody goes bankrupt there because they got sick. Nobody dies in a waiting room because their insurance said no.
'NATO wasn't there when we needed them." When exactly was that, champ? September 11? Because NATO invoked Article 5 for the first and only time in history FOR YOU. Soldiers from dozens of countries deployed, fought, bled, and died in Afghanistan FOR YOU. Australia wasn't even in NATO and we still showed up. For 20 years.
And you pulled out at 2am without telling anyone and left them to deal with the mess.
So maybe before you start calling other countries poorly run, have a look at your own backyard, you spray-tanned aluminium siding salesman. The only thing poorly run in this picture is your f----- mouth."
Very well stated.
This is Penny. She came up with her own trick. Really hopes you like it, and will repeat it as many times as necessary until you acknowledge that you do. 14/10
That golden chip was fried in oil older than the lettuce next to it, and dirtier than the cloth they wiped your table with.
Here is what nobody behind the counter says. Heat any oil past about 180 degrees and it starts to rot. Run it back to temperature again and again and the fat comes apart, oxidising and polymerising into the brown, sticky varnish welded to the inside of every commercial fryer like grease in a drain.
What it breathes off is a genuine roll call. Aldehydes. Trans fats conjured by the heat. Acrylamide where the starch scorches. And 4-hydroxynonenal, a compound studies keep tying to the diseases people fear most. One analysis found a single deep-fried meal can carry many times the aldehyde load considered tolerable in a whole day.
Now the part that should turn your stomach. That oil is not changed after each service. Industry surveys put the average fryer at five to seven days before a change, and plenty crawl on far longer, topped up rather than emptied, because fresh oil costs money and rancid oil is free.
So do the sum. The fat searing your Friday chips first got hot on Monday. It has been heated, cooled and dragged back to temperature dozens of times, stewing all week in the crumbs, batter scabs and sloughed-off fragments of everything fried before you.
And every cycle makes it fouler. The oil darkens to the colour of old engine sludge, thickens, foams, and starts smoking at lower temperatures, the visible signal it is breaking down faster still. A heavily seasoned fryer is not craftsmanship. It is oil that should have been poured away days ago, cooking your dinner instead.
Seed oils make it worse. Their fragile structure is exactly the kind that oxidises quickest under repeated heat, the quiet joke in having binned the stable animal fats that fried cleanly for a century.
So the crisp golden chip is mostly theatre. Starch dunked in a week-old vat of degraded sludge. The restaurant keeps the savings. You swallow the rest.
