No matter what book you pick, the first few books you read are going to be really hard. Reading itself is a skill that takes lots of time to develop. So take your time and don't be too hard on yourself.
Some nice alternatives to Lingq (I'll focus mainly on Japanese). Many have a nicer UX (since less confusing) but are underrated. [Disclaimer: I am not related to any of the devs]

@BeardedSSJ When I was memorizing kanji it was 100% anki. Now though, a lot of easy-ish reading does the heavy lifting for me. Last month it was 1% anki (simple sentence cards, 3 new cards a day) and 99% reading.
