@jpolga@jcorrales2011@HarvardDRCLAS That is great. It is very hard to think of teaching LA politics and Venezuela in particular without @jcorrales2011 's books and journal articles. Always empirically on point, always theoretically rich.
The work that won today's Nobel in medicine (and saved millions of lives) "was summarily rejected by the journals Nature and Science". Keep trying. Journals are often resistant to new ideas.
.@MatiasSpektor: I don’t see any immediate crisis — what I worry about is that Brazil is divided, polarization is at a peak, in an economy that is very frail. In this context, anything can be a flame.
If you want orthodox monetary policy these days, look to Brazil. No whiff of financial or fiscal dominance. Just early and aggressive hikes that got in front of Brazil's rise in inflation. No accident that Brazilian Real is the best performing major currency against the Dollar...
Untold story of 2022 is "resurgent Brazil." Brazil's Real is up 8% year-to-date, even as Japan's Yen is down 20% & Euro is down 14%. We've shifted to a higher commodity price equilibrium, wth the S&P commodity price index up 40% since pre-COVID. That's a huge windfall for Brazil.

Who calls default? Not rating agencies - forbidden by EU. So bondholders of "25% outstanding bonds". Immunity? No waiver of sovereign immunity hence enforcement difficult.
