Call for nomination: 2025 UN NCD @un_ncd Task Force #Awards focusing on obesity prevention and control.
No country is immune to the impacts of the #obesity pandemic, which now affects over 1 billion people – including 160 million children and adolescents – across the world. Without urgent action, the global costs of #overweight and obesity are predicted to reach a staggering US$ 3 trillion per year by 2030.
Today, United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on Noncommunicable Diseases in collaboration with @WHO Department of Nutrition and Food Safety announced a call for nominations for the 2025 Awards.
This year, awards will recognise the effort of governments and their partners to prevent and control obesity, one of the world’s most pressing public #health challenges. Application deadline is 30 April 2025.
Tackling obesity underscores the commitment by the Task Force to promote cross-sector action to combat the noncommunicable diseases #NCDs-related Sustainable Development Goal targets.
Tackling obesity will be central to Member State discussions as they prepare for the Fourth High-level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on NCDs in New York this September. Award winners will be announced during the United Nations General Assembly high-level week.
Launched in 2018, the prestigious Task Force Awards recognise excellence in multisectoral action to combat to advance the NCDs-related #SDGs. Last year the focus was on assistive technology, in 2023 it was on digital health, and in 2022, it was on primary health care.

On International Childhood Cancer Day the building of the World Health Organization in Jordan was lit up in gold, to honour the courage of children with cancer, and help spread awareness around it.

Thank you RD @HananBalkhy for raising the profile of #childhoodcancer on 🎗️International Childhood Cancer Day. Together we can make a difference for thousands of children in need!

On International #ChildhoodCancer Day, we must confront a stark reality:
🔹In high-income countries, over 80% of children with cancer are cured.
🔹 In low-income countries, that number drops below 30%.
Too many children lack doctors, medicines & proper care—especially in conflict zones.
At @WHOEMRO, we’re tackling these barriers through our flagship initiatives. Health care must be a priority, especially in emergencies.
Many children with #cancer lack access to life-saving medicines. @WHO and @StJudeResearch are changing that!
Today, we are starting the delivery of childhood cancer medicines to Mongolia and Uzbekistan: https://t.co/24fmpIFUEv
The next shipments are planned for Ecuador, Jordan, Nepal and Zambia.
This year, approximately 5000 children with cancer will benefit from these treatments at more than 30 hospitals across these countries.
@WHO & @StJude have launched the Global Platform for Access to Childhood Cancer Medicines, delivering essential treatments to Mongolia, Uzbekistan, and soon Jordan. This initiative will reach 5,000 children across 30+ hospitals.

The impact of the @un_ncd investment cases:
Ethiopia 🇪🇹 :
“The investment case has been widely used as an advocacy tool since its launch in 2019, as well as a background paper guiding NCD action.
For instance, it contributed to building the argument to increase the budget of the NCD team within the Ministry of Health.
Findings from the investment case supported collaboration between Ministries of Health and Finance around the taxation on health harming products, that is, tobacco and alcohol. It was also used to support the ban on alcohol advertisement.”

By the end of this week, nearly 200,000 families will have lost someone they love to #cancer. And yet there is so much we can do to prevent cancer and save lives.
For example, since 2018, we have launched three initiatives to fight cervical, childhood and breast cancers. These initiatives are now in more than 100 countries and are helping to unlock hundreds of millions of US dollars in investment.
