@ZohranKMamdani you say you support the protests, yet you question the legacy of the man who made it possible for a nation to protest freely in the first place. that’s not critical thinking, it’s historical ignorance mixed with arrogance. his vision simply goes beyond your frame of reference.

People calling Atatürk’s statues “worship” clearly don’t know what respect means. He built a modern nation from ashes. Criticism isn’t banned, only insults are. That’s not a cult, that’s gratitude. Maybe you’ve never been loved enough to recognize what respect feels like.
A lot of angry Turkish comments under that post.
Mamdani supported the Gezi Protests in 2013, the largest protest movement in the history of the Republic.
Yet the moment someone criticizes Atatürk, Turks lose their minds. Cursing, crying, and threatening.
Atatürk’s personality cult doesn’t translate to the modern world anymore.
No democratic society needs mandatory portraits, statues on every corner, or laws protecting a leader from criticism. That mentality belongs to the 19th century, not the present.
You can be taught otherwise in school, but it doesn’t change the truth.
Modern politics doesn’t revolve around whether someone “supports Atatürk” or not.
Insisting on that makes you look pathetic and funny.
Medya A.Ş. eski Genel Müdürü Dr. Elif İpek Atayman, 19 Mart’ta başlayan İBB "soruşturamamasının" 1. dalgasında tutuklandı.
Atayman ifadesinde netti:
