Israeli Strikes Raise Concerns of Indiscriminate Targeting, Disproportionate Civilian Casualties

These findings are a result of extensive data analysis by Palestinian-American Dana Erekat, a CEO of a data analytics company and an MIT graduate from 2009, utilizing data from the Palestinian Ministry of Health on the number of deaths from Israeli bombardment across the period from Oct 7th to Oct 23rd.

The data uncovers a concerning breakdown: during this period, 43% of all Palestinians killed in Gaza are women, while this group constitutes 49% of the population.

A similar correlation emerges with children, as 40% of the casualties are under 18 years old, who make up 47% of the population.

Obtaining precise numbers and demographics of groups considered threats by Israel due to their illegal status is challenging.

Nevertheless, for a comparative perspective, we can examine another indicator of whom Israel perceives as a threat within Palestinian society to the Israeli state - the Palestinians arrested for trial in Military court before the outbreak of hostilities.

As of October 8th, 5,200 Palestinians are incarcerated, including 33 women (0.63% of the prison population) and 170 under 18 (3.26%).

While it's important to acknowledge the limitations of using this data as a direct proxy for identifying Palestinian militant fighters, it does provide a potential point of comparison regarding whom Israel considers potential combatants in contrast to those currently bearing the brunt of the bombardment.

While not providing definitive conclusions, these findings highlight the pressing need for a thorough investigation.

They point towards the possibility of the use of indiscriminate attacks, which might not align with the official stance of the Israeli Government.

It is important to note, however, that across the Middle East, Gaza is among the smallest and most densely packed cities.

The urban area around Gaza City is home to nearly 2 million people living in an 88-square-mile expanse, which is about 21,000 people per square mile.

While the ‘Demographia report’ found Gaza City isn’t as packed as the world’s most dense cities, including Dhaka, Bangladesh, which has over 80,000 people per square mile, it’s more crowded than global cities, such as London, and three times more dense than LA, the most population-dense area in the US.
