It was 3 years ago today that Azerbaijan ruthlessly attacked Artsakh and ethnically cleansed it of the 120,000 Armenians who lived there. The only Armenians there now on this ancestral Armenian land are the Artsakh government leaders and Armenian soldiers held illegally in jail.

Three years.

Three years since Artsakh was occupied. Three years since more than 150,000 Armenians were forced from the homes, villages, churches, cemeteries and mountains their families had known for generations.

Today, virtually no Armenians remain living in Artsakh.

The streets of Stepanakert are silent of Armenian voices. The churches still stand, but now even they are threatened. Armenian homes are being demolished, neighborhoods are being transformed, and the physical traces of generations of Armenian life are disappearing before our eyes.

Behind every number is a home left behind, a grave that can no longer be visited, a childhood interrupted, and an entire people separated from their homeland.

Three years have passed, but Artsakh has not been forgotten.

We remember those who gave their lives. We remember those who were forced to leave. We remember the missing, the captive, and every family carrying the pain of September 2023.

Artsakh lives in our memory, our history, and in the people who still call it home.

Armenian hostage Ruben Vardanyan has issued a public appeal from Azerbaijan’s Umbaki prison, detailing what he says are systematic violations of the rights of the 19 Armenians held there and calling on Azerbaijan’s Human Rights Commissioner, Sabina Aliyeva, to intervene.

Vardanyan said the violations contravene rights guaranteed under Azerbaijan’s own laws, including access to weekly phone calls, video communication with family members, medical care, legal and notarial services, daily physical exercise and written responses to complaints.

According to Vardanyan, some of the Armenian hostages have been unable to see their children even by video for nearly three years. One hostage’s child was just 10 months old when his father was taken and is now more than three and a half years old.

Vardanyan also said he has been unable to undergo medical tests despite repeated requests, including an offer to cover the costs himself. The Armenian hostages are allowed only 20 to 40 minutes of physical exercise once a week, he said, despite Azerbaijani regulations providing for at least one hour per day.

The situation has worsened since the International Committee of the Red Cross was forced to end its operations in Azerbaijan. Vardanyan said most of the hostages have since been deprived of a key channel for receiving letters, photographs, food, clothing and other packages from their families. Some, he said, do not even have enough money to buy food from the prison shop or make telephone calls.

He also said the hotline provided by Azerbaijan’s Human Rights Commissioner is effectively nonfunctional, while appeals submitted by his lawyer and family have gone unanswered.

Vardanyan called on Aliyeva to personally meet with the Armenian hostages and ensure that Azerbaijan complies with its own legislation.

“It does not matter how much longer we spend in Umbaki. Please comply with your own laws,” Vardanyan said.

The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin has strongly condemned statements by Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev during his recent visit to the Armenian monasteries of Gandzasar and Dadivank in occupied Artsakh, accusing him of denying their Armenian identity and falsely presenting them as “Caucasian Albanian.”

In a statement, the Mother See described the effort as an “open falsification” of history and an attack on the historical memory and spiritual heritage of the Armenian people.

It said Azerbaijan’s attempts to distort historical facts for political purposes are part of a broader state policy of anti-Armenian hostility and appropriation of Armenian cultural heritage.

The Mother See also criticized the participation of foreign diplomats and representatives of international organizations in the Azerbaijani-organized visit, warning that their involvement risks lending legitimacy to efforts to appropriate Armenian historical heritage.

It called on those representatives to condemn attempts to distort the identity of Armenian holy sites and attacks on Artsakh’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

The Armenian Apostolic Church said it has repeatedly warned that, following the forced depopulation of Artsakh, Azerbaijani authorities have pursued a policy of appropriating Armenian monuments, destroying churches, khachkars and cemeteries, and removing evidence of their Armenian identity.

The Mother See called on Armenian authorities to take practical steps to prevent further destruction and urged friendly states and international organizations to help protect Artsakh’s ancient Armenian Christian heritage.

“Lasting peace in the region requires respect for the faith, historical memory and fundamental rights of peoples,” the statement said.

Calm has reportedly returned to Kobani as HTS-affiliated Syrian security forces leave the city. Reports indicate that Mazloum Abdi has arrived.

This needless confrontation left at least 8 people dead and 17 injured, with reports that opposing forces drew weapons on one another.

The U.S. and international community must push back when Damascus deploys outside forces instead of relying on qualified local SDF brigades already integrated into the Syrian government.

My condolences to the family of Sami Sapan, who was brutally murdered, and to the families of the protesters reportedly killed in detention.

Praying for peace and healing in Kobani and throughout Syria, while deeply frustrated that Syrians are once again paying the price for violence that could—and should—have been avoided.

Update from Kobani: I am told HTS-affiliated Syrian security forces from outside the region remain with at least 12 vehicles and are harassing residents and making arrests.

The U.S. and intl community must press them to leave to protect residents and allow funeral processions.

Sikh Americans have long served and strengthened this country.

Dehumanizing any community is dangerous. It is a recognized warning sign of genocide and other mass atrocities.
