We plant rye in our tanks and tires. We call these are Redneck Raised Beds! They work pretty good for growing tomatoes 🍅 and peppers 🌶️ 🫑 . This spring we will let the rye get 2-3’ tall, clip it off, and then spray the stubble with Roundup spreading the residue on top.
I haven’t posted much since my retirement in 2023, but wanted to show these photos of how rye has suppressed henbit in our pumpkin 🎃 patch. Note the henbit on the edge of patch. Didn’t believe I had a stand until earlier this spring. Last fall the deer ate the rye when came up.

Most common mistakes when grazing cereal rye is not getting on it early enough and not having high enough stocking density! Once it gets going it grows fast and recovers fast. Start at 5 inches and 0.5 to 1 cow/acre. Rotating totally pays! @UNLBeef (assuming we get some rain!🤞)
Hey hey! I know this impressive lady! @hmgrwn1 is one heckuva leader in the conservation farming space. Proud to know and work with her and #Iowa is lucky to have her!
