The arts can tell powerful messages on global public health.
Tonight, the opening show of @ThatMould told the story of Fleming’s discovery of penicillin, along with a warning of resistance, and a call to action for the audience.
I encourage everyone to see this musical.
9. @DocJeffD just pleaded for money to turn vaccines into vaccinations. State & local public health depts are on life support. The federal government has delivered 2 Cadillac vaccines "but they come with empty gas tanks."
Hearing this over & over. $$ needed to put vax in arms.
With the possibility of COVID-19 vaccines becoming available soon, get the facts on vaccine development. Learn more about the scientific rigor that goes into developing a vaccine, and how the vaccine process is safe and effective. #COVIDVaccineFacts https://t.co/DW7HooI2bX

Very impt story re #COVID19 and #AMR. This will emerge as major narrative in wks and mos ahead---#COVID19#AMR related outbreaks. Paradoxically, our in-hospital approaches to COVID19 might facilitate spread of local nosocomial, AMR pathogens. More of these stories will follow!
For those curious about PASTEUR and other proposals to reform US antibiotic development and maketplace, we review here (see Table 2). There still might be legislation yet out of Congress by year's end. https://t.co/yf8uLnKz2F
Antibiotic resistance is a public health threat. New AMA & @pewhealth research found that 91% of docs felt that inappropriate prescribing was a problem in outpatient settings—highlighting the need for improved stewardship to combat antibiotic resistance. https://t.co/OYiQjVVgh4
.@IAmBiotech's @gmfrankvt & @JimGreenwood discuss the need in the face of #COVID19 for the #DISARMAct, which will provide doctors & patients with access to new, life-saving #antimicrobials & help alleviate the market challenges facing developers. Listen https://t.co/RtsmM5SpL8
Plazomicin will not be brought to market in Europe. While this is distressing, this is a prime example of why we need to think differently about paying for #antibiotics.

Community #COVID19 autopsy data starting to appear.
From BMJ: "Superimposed bronchopneumonia (likely bacterial infection) was seen in two of the six cases of confirmed or likely COVID-19 infection, and in the case of rhinovirus infection." No micro! #AMR https://t.co/DtlsFyLl2k
Bacteremia rate really jumps out, far beyond what intimated out of Chinese centers. Real pathogens or contaminants? Also, no data on HAP/VAP, which is really where you'd expect superinfxns. Suggests possible 20-30% overall superinfxn rate among highest risk COVID pts--vent, ICU.
“Our worst fears are realized,” @WeFightAMR’s Greg Frank says of the dwindling #antibiotic pipeline in the face of the #COVID19 pandemic. https://t.co/xQVlWyrrbk
This study was well before SARS-CoV-2 emerged, but as the pandemic fills the ICUs of the world, this is a reminder of what is probably awaits the sickest victims in the ICU, even in normal times, and how routinely antibiotics are needed in the ICU. 4/4
