@sales_belinda It's worth looking into the guy who stood down for Burnham. He had to resign a ministerial post just a few months earlier, so the whole standing aside for Andy thing is a way of not leaving in disgrace.
@JohnPri59190318@MaryCreagh_ That first part says more about the electoral system than anything else. The votes only changed by 500k (a reduction). The real difference is that the Tory vote collapsed.
Lied to get there but thought he could carry on in the same vein once in office.
His large parliamentary majority didn’t give him immunity - it actually contributed to his demise as his own MPs weren’t afraid to call time on the charlatan for fear of losing their own seats.
Good riddance.
@MaryCreagh_ A landslide??? 66% voted *against* Labour and he got 500k fewer votes than Labour did under Corbyn in 2019.
And, if people had known what a shitshow we were going to have over the next two years, it would have been even less.
@news4reformuk@SangitaMyska Dig back far enough and you'll find Tories calling for an election when Brown took over. They both try it on in opposition.
@CryptoDank420@SangitaMyska@AdamHardie89 The media plays a large part in this, especially since the start of televised debates. They are trying to push us towards US-style elections when our system is significantly different. People elect a local representative. The next PM is likely to be leading a coalition.
@heartofmatcha I feel sorry for all the people who voted for him as Mayor only for him to waltz off barely two years later. Always been selfish though.
@moon63@bbcnickrobinson "overwhelmingly voted"?? Labour under Starmer in 2024 got 500k *fewer* votes than Labour under Corbyn in 2019. 66% of voters didn't want them.
@KwazyJ@StevieDeeOTT@StevenTank40953@AdamJSchwarz He knew he'd win by doing fuck all, because the Tory vote would inevitably collapse. Labour under Starmer in 2024 got 500k *fewer* votes than Labour under Corbyn in 2019.
@StevenTank40953@AdamJSchwarz The thing is, we don't get to pick. Only two people in that picture even led a successful general election campaign. Much as the Republican party keeps Trump in power, so the Tories gave us these reprobates.
@Matthew96296853@TStandfield1789@KemiBadenoch@Conservatives And yet Gordon Brown had the easiest ride to #10 of anyone this millennium. No doubt Burnham will follow in his footsteps with the way he's been lined up to take over. Even Truss had to win a leadership election.
