There is a constant feeling that K-12 education is changing too slowly. That innovation doesn’t ever take off in public education. Parents, community members, funders, and leaders frequently get excited about the potential of new ideas and then quickly grow frustrated when they don’t gain as much traction as we would like. That is usually when folks start to say that the “system” is a failure and needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.

A key underlying reason innovation struggles to get off the ground in K-12 ed is teacher capacity. No matter the innovation you seek to scale, teachers need to deploy the solution. And teachers are at capacity. So, if we want to see change, we need to focus on solutions that unleash teacher capacity. Otherwise, we will be perpetually frustrated.

NEWS: Elon Musk plans to establish a STEM-focused primary and secondary school, with eventual expansion into a university offering high-level education, featuring traditional and hands-on learning methods.

- The university will employ “experienced faculty” and feature a traditional curriculum “alongside hands-on learning experience including simulations, case studies, fabrication/design projects and labs,” according to the application.

- The plan for this university was formalized in an application for tax-exempt status to the IRS in October 2022, approved by March.

- Elon has prior experience in education, having founded Ad Astra for his children and SpaceX employees' children.

- Elon’s new STEM school anticipates an initial class of 50 students and is in the process of staffing.

TL;DR - 5 lessons I learned during my transition from classroom teaching to working on my own

• Purge school systems with your own
• Hold on to your opinions
• Writing is a form of generosity
• Ride the digital wave
• Feedback -> better writing -> data-driven products etc.

Before #teaching, I wrote for print mags etc. To transition from being a #teacher to working for myself I :

• had to purge school systems to #WFH
• recover my own voice
• relearn writing for the digital world

Lesson #5: Social media feedback leads to better writing

Writing for print has delayed feedback.

Writing in social media has a faster feedback turn-around & generates data.

It leads to better written pieces. Later you can produce data-driven products and services.
