Our CFO noticed we spend $65K a month on a proprietary cybersecurity platform called Sentinel Protocol.

She scheduled a meeting with me to discuss our enterprise software expenditures.

She wanted to know why our licensing fees had increased by 15% year over year.

I told her Sentinel Protocol is the only thing standing between our corporate data and a highly coordinated North Korean ransomware syndicate.

I explained that it uses a polymorphic encryption manifold to dynamically scrub our inbound packets.

She asked if she could get a Zoom meeting with their customer success team to discuss a volume discount.

I told her I'd set it up immediately.

The problem is that Sentinel Protocol doesn't exist.

It's an LLC I registered in Delaware 4 years ago.

I'm Sentinel Protocol.

My entire cybersecurity platform is just a batch script I wrote in 2018 that restarts our routers every Sunday at 3 AM.

The script took me 14 minutes to write.

I realized very early in my career that executives will never question a line item if you use the word quantum or heuristic.

But now the CFO wanted to speak to the vendor.

I went on Fiverr and hired a struggling voice actor from Chicago for $45.

I told him his character was a high-powered Silicon Valley tech bro who just drank 3 Celsius energy drinks.

I wrote him a 4-page script composed entirely of weaponized IT buzzwords.

He showed up to the Zoom call wearing a Patagonia fleece vest and introduced himself as the VP of Customer Success.

He was absolutely phenomenal.

When the CFO asked about lowering the cost, he scoffed.

He told her that downgrading our service tier would expose our legacy endpoints to asynchronous tunneling attacks.

He leaned into the webcam and asked if she was prepared to explain a catastrophic data breach to the shareholders.

She apologized for questioning the infrastructure.

Before the call ended, my Fiverr actor successfully up-sold her on a $12K biometric redundancy package.

I don't even know what a biometric redundancy package is.

I tipped the actor $100 and told him I'd need him again next quarter.

The CFO sent me an email thanking me for managing such a crucial vendor relationship.

I just used the new budget increase to buy a pontoon boat.

Me: I got the job.
Him: Why don't you sound happy?
Me: Because it's three thousand miles away.
Him: Oh.
Me: You're supposed to tell me to take it.
Him: I am.
Me: Even if it means losing us?
Him: If loving you means asking you to become less...
then I'm loving you wrong.
Me: You're making this harder.

Friend A was telling me about Friend B. They both live in abuja. A said if he was stranded on the road at midnight because his car developed a fault, B is someone he can call, even if B doesn't have a car at that point. He said B would find a way to come pick him up. B has on a number of occasions called A to follow him pick someone up at the dead of the night. So he knows that if A can do it for these other people, he will do it for him. The problem many of you have is that you're looking for who is kind to you alone, and unkind to others. Your vetting skill is terrible.

One time I was hanging out with Friend A and Friend C. It was my first time meeting with C. I knew C through A but we were meeting in person for the first time. We went clubbing and C couldn't even club because he was high. He just laid on the club chair and slept. Myself and Friend A took his Phone, money and wallet and kept in our possession, put a cushion under his head and allowed him sleep through the noise. When we were done, we drove C home and put him to bed. When his head was clear, he confessed he hadn't experienced friendship like that and was being too appreciative. It was funny because what else were friends supposed to do when one is vulnerable? I had known A for 15 years and I would take a bullet for him. Protecting C came naturally to us because of value system.

We often talk about people recommending you for gigs or job, and mentioning your name in closed door meetings. People also recommend friendship when they find you trustworthy. People will not trust you because you ask them to. You have to make yourself trustworthy. Trust is earned. The thing about friendship is that, if you want friends, you have to first make yourself friendly. Are your friends secret safe with you? Can you give your life for them? Will you show up when they need you? Friendship is not confessional, it is sacrificial.

Young King,

Focus on liquidity and cash flow first. Assets like Real Estate are good, but cash is king. And, before you start thinking about investments, think of how to increase your earnings.

people underestimate how much corporate teaches you. systems, structure, how decisions get made at scale, what bad leadership costs a company. you learn all of that on someone else’s budget before you risk your own.

In 2018, I lost my job in Lagos. Hid it from family for 4 months.

Every morning, dressed up, carried a laptop bag, and left the house like normal. Sat in a buka in Yaba with free Wi-Fi applying endlessly.

One day, my dad called me aside.

“I know you lost your job.”

I froze.

He said, “I didn’t want to shame you. A man feels small when he can’t provide.”

Then he gave me ₦20k from pension, with his arthritis bills piling up. “Hold yourself. Don’t tell your mother.”

I cried that night. Not for money. But for the quiet love protecting my pride.

Two months later, a better job came.

Now I pay all his bills.

That ₦20k wasn’t cash. It was belief. And belief changes everything.

Do you have moments when your parents stood by you?

In the early stages, products tend to work despite weak structure. Issues remain manageable because volume is low.

As usage increases, those same gaps become more visible. In many cases, the product itself is not the issue. The surrounding setup is.

Growth highlights whether systems were designed to support more users, more activity, and more people working together.

For teams building or supporting products, paying attention to what becomes harder as usage grows can guide better decisions.

The early signals help teams strengthen their setup before growth turns manageable issues into real constraints.
