A message from Palestinian journalists in Gaza, the West Bank and in communities beyond to @RTS_media

We write to you as two more of our colleagues have been murdered. Hossam Shabat and Mohamed Mansour died in Gaza today because they were journalists.

They are added to more than 200 other Palestinian journalists who have been killed over the past 18 months for being truth-tellers who bring stories from Gaza to the world.

Gaza’s journalists deserve recognition. But that recognition is not even the barest minimum of what they are truly owed. There is a moral imperative that they receive international protection, access, support, and global outrage for their systematic targeting that translates into definitive action – not mere statements, symbolic gestures, or awards. Their courage must be matched with courage from individuals, organizations, and institutions the world over who value press freedom.

Gaza’s journalists deserve infinitely more than a handshake of an award. They need more from groups consumed by fear of adding ‘fuel to the fire’. They deserve real change, true advocacy, and tangible protections - including calls for the ongoing ban on international journalists being lifted.

We journalists from Gaza do not chase awards, understanding them to be of little to no consequence in the middle of daily bombardments. We are dedicated to reporting about the war on the place we call home. It is a duty of ours as members of this field. We approach our responsibility to bring the news to everyone with utmost gravity and seriousness.

Until now, the weight of reporting in Gaza has been held with strength, unshakable resolve, grace, innovation, and deep integrity upon the shoulders of Palestinian journalists in Gaza - a heavy responsibility they have borne alone.

Even though this is the deadliest time for Palestinian journalists in history, day in and day out they continue, despite the great risk to their safety and the safety of their families.

Through their sacrifice, they have given the whole world unprecedented access to what is happening in Gaza in real time – countless hours of footage, innumerable photographs, interviews, stories, statistics, and analysis.

Hossam, at just 23, wrote his own obituary. It was shared publicly on the day of his death. This young man said, “By God, I fulfilled my duty as a journalist. I risked everything to report the truth, and now, I am finally at rest—something I haven’t known in the past 18 months.”

No one should ever have to write such words. No journalist should have to anticipate their own demise as an inevitability because their entire field is being targeted. We owe Palestinian journalists material assurances so they can continue to carry out their invaluable work with dignity. That is what is required to truly recognize them and their contributions.
