“Rukha sukha”?
The menu had Himalayan morels, saffron, mamra almonds, asparagus, paneer in rich shallot-tomato gravy, mushroom galouti on sheermal, kesar mango, coconut, millet pulao, mulberry phirni with gold leaf, fruit cream & jalebi. That’s your definition of poor?
And “khandvi has no real nutrients” is an especially strange claim - its base is gram flour, i.e. chickpeas.
Bengali cuisine is magnificent. So are Gujarati, Lucknowi, Himalayan, South Indian and Delhi traditions - all represented here. India hosting BRICS does not mean Bengal gets editorial control of the menu.
You’re perfectly entitled to prefer aloo posto. Turning personal taste into a national humiliation is where food criticism becomes comedy.
Even if most Indians eat non-veg, a state banquet isn’t an opinion poll with chicken served in demographic proportion. India chose to showcase one rich part of Indian cuisine. Vegetarian food is also Indian culture - not “pretending” the rest doesn’t exist.
And unlike meat, a vegetarian menu is something almost every guest can eat. That’s hospitality, not oppression.
People are mocking this BRICS state dinner because it is vegetarian.
This is not “just a vegetarian menu.” It is a carefully curated showcase of Indian ingredients, regional traditions and fine-dining technique.
Look at what is actually on the table:
• Gucchi / Himalayan morels — among India’s most prized mushrooms. They grow seasonally in Himalayan regions, are difficult to source in quantity and are traditionally hand-collected, which is why good-quality morels command premium prices.
• Saffron — one of the world’s most expensive spices by weight. Thousands of delicate crocus flowers are needed to produce a small amount of saffron.
• Mamra almonds — a premium almond variety valued for its rich flavour, high natural oil content and limited production compared with ordinary commercial almonds.
• Sheermal — a saffron-scented bread with Persian-Mughal culinary roots, traditionally associated with rich festive and royal-style cuisine.
• Khandvi Mille-Feuille — not simply “gram flour.” Khandvi itself requires precision to cook, spread paper-thin and roll properly; presenting it as a mille-feuille turns a Gujarati classic into fine dining without losing its identity.
• Khumb Galouti — a vegetarian interpretation of the famous galouti style, using mushrooms to create the same soft, delicate texture while keeping the menu entirely vegetarian.
• Millets — ancient Indian grains brought into a modern state-banquet setting, combining heritage with contemporary nutrition and sustainability.
• Phirni with mulberries and gold leaf — a traditional milk-and-rice dessert finished with fruit and edible gold, giving a centuries-old dish a ceremonial, luxurious presentation.
And that is what makes this menu impressive.
It moves from Gujarat to North India, the Himalayas, South India and Old Delhi; from humble grains and lentils to saffron, morels, premium almonds and gold leaf.
This was not vegetarian food chosen because something was “missing.”
It was vegetarian food chosen because Indian cuisine is rich enough to make meat completely unnecessary.
The menu is thoughtful, regional, luxurious and unmistakably Indian.
Sometimes luxury is not a steak on a plate.
Sometimes it is a wild Himalayan morel, a few strands of saffron, and centuries of culinary knowledge behind them.

Pawan ji, BRICS 2012 was hosted by Manmohan Singh’s UPA too. The menu was deliberately built around Indian cuisine — Indian Express literally described Indian food as its “crowning glory.”
Obama then designed an overwhelmingly vegetarian State Dinner for Manmohan Singh. UAE served Modi an entirely vegetarian banquet. Japan's G20 showcased Japanese produce while separately accommodating dietary restrictions.
That’s called culinary diplomacy: the host showcases its culture and accommodates genuine dietary needs.
Apparently it becomes “imposition” only when BJP serves the paneer. 😂
The BJP’s habit of imposing its dietary preferences on fellow Indians is already deeply problematic. Now, they have taken it a step further by imposing their own choices on dignitaries from across the world.
India is a rich, diverse, multi-cuisine country, home to some of the finest non-vegetarian delicacies that people across the world relish and enjoy. So why did the Modi government choose to hide this part of India’s culture?
Is it ashamed of the diversity that makes India what it is?
Hospitality means the host showcases its culture—not that guests write the menu. India served an all-vegetarian G20 state dinner in 2023 too. Nobody was “disrespected.” Funny how Indian cuisine is “soft power” only when it includes food you approve of.
India needs to learn the meaning of hospitality. Hosting the BRICS summit means making guests feel welcome-not imposing India’s brand of vegetarianism on them. Good hosts respect their guests’ cultures, preferences and choices. That’s how you build goodwill and soft power.

At 82, when most people would naturally be slowing down, His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj took on the responsibility of guiding a worldwide Hindu spiritual fellowship.
And in the years since, we have seen Hindu spirituality and India’s spiritual values reach places that earlier generations could hardly have imagined.
In New Jersey, BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham became a major centre of Hindu faith, culture and devotion.
In Abu Dhabi, in a Muslim-majority country, the BAPS Hindu Mandir became the first traditional Hindu stone temple in the Middle East — a project that itself became a symbol of coexistence and mutual respect.
And in France, at the age of 92, Mahant Swami Maharaj travelled to be part of the inauguration celebrations of the first traditional Hindu mandir in the country.
From Robbinsville to Abu Dhabi to Paris, these are not just temples.
They are places where Hindu dharma, Indian spirituality, seva, family values and devotion have found a visible home in completely different parts of the world.
And what I find most remarkable is that despite the scale of all this, Mahant Swami Maharaj himself remains so simple.
His life reflects the qualities we traditionally associate with a true sant - humility, self-control, detachment, compassion, purity, devotion, forgiveness and seva.
He speaks softly. He lives simply. He asks very little for himself. And even while carrying the responsibility of a global spiritual organization, the focus never seems to be on himself.
That, to me, is one of the greatest lessons in his life.
Leadership without ego. Spiritual strength without noise. Discipline without harshness. Seva without seeking recognition.
At 93, after more than six decades as a sadhu, he is still travelling, guiding, inspiring and helping take Hindu spirituality and India’s spiritual heritage across the world.
On his 93rd birthday, prayers for Mahant Swami Maharaj’s continued good health and strength.
May his life continue to inspire generations toward faith, humility, seva and inner peace.
Jai Swaminarayan. 🙏
Bhai ne pehle khud ko MP ka CM maan liya, phir khud ki government fail kara di, khud guilt le liya, khud resignation likh diya… aur end mein “satire” chipka diya. 😂
Matlab role-play bhi aisa ki bachcha bole: “Mummy aaj main CM hoon.”
Mummy: “Theek hai beta, 8 baje tak resign karke homework kar lena.”
Ye Political Party, political role-play competition zyada lag raha hai.
Ashoka emblem, Mantralaya, Governor, resignation — bas Raj Bhavan jaake gate pe letter dena reh gaya. 😭
Kaheka GenZ Leader, Crap Dalla.. Shahi hai bhai tu cockroaches party ka hi memeber hai, that is what you deserve.
I hereby resign as the Chief Minister of MP with immediate effect.
I thank Hon’ble PM @narendramodi ji for giving me the opportunity to serve the people of MP, an opportunity in which I have clearly failed.
@GovernorMP
“80% of Indians are non-vegetarian.”
Accha. Toh ab state banquet bhi census ke hisaab se chalega? 80% chicken, 20% paneer? Side mein ECI officer khada rahega plate counting ke liye? 😂
Even if we accept your 80% number, what does it prove? A state dinner is not a survey of what Indians eat at home. It is a curated diplomatic event. The host decides what part of its culture it wants to showcase.
Nobody is saying India has no great non-veg food. Of course it does. But one vegetarian banquet does not erase biryani, kebabs or fish from Indian civilization.
And unless you’ve actually hosted a state banquet as PM or President, maybe don’t explain diplomatic menu protocol like you’re arguing with a wedding caterer over “non-veg counter kahan hai?”
This menu had Himalayan gucchi morels, saffron, mamra almonds, millets, paneer, regional breads and traditional desserts. That is a cultural showcase, not deprivation.
India can serve vegetarian food for one official dinner without issuing an apology to the chicken lobby.
