Social Security runs on COBOL, which lacks built-in date/time types. Unknown dates may default to 00000000, but COBOL itself doesn’t equate 0 to 1875. If SSA uses 1875, it’s a manual choice, not a COBOL rule. SSA follows its own date-handling policies. #COBOL #SocialSecurity

I have experience coding in COBOL. COBOL doesn’t inherently store dates in ISO 8601 format, and it doesn’t fix 1875 as a reference date. While some systems default unknown dates to 000000, COBOL doesn’t equate 0 to 1875. The 150 yo is likely a system-specific quirk
