Shocking! Kidding, most obvious thing in the world. In fact, I predicted this the second the Schumer-Manchin deal was announced. Politics is so simple. Follow the money. That’s where you’ll find corrupt politicians (and their donors).
In short, because of the New Orleans City Council, regulator of Entergy. The “riders” are all hitting. We are paying for a nuclear power plant that doesn’t provide power. We’re paying for a gas power plant we didn’t want & didn’t need. Solution: Council action & municipalization.
@SenSanders quotes from letter from many orgs and @CenterForBioDiv that calls the legislation suicide by tying clean energy development to fossil fuel development on federal lands. will offer amendment to remove pro-oil/gas sections of bill - @TexasSierraClub supports this
While the Inflation Reduction Act, as written, will provide unprecedented investments in many of our priority areas, it stands to bring tremendous harm to the Gulf South - one of the most impacted areas in the country from climate change. 🧵
To quote Naomi Klein, “Sacrifice zones [categorize] whole subsets of humanity as less than fully human, which makes their poisoning in the name of progress somehow acceptable.”
Sacrificing 1 area of the country to pollution from oil & gas development as a deal to unlock big clean energy potential in other areas of the country is highly problematic. We reject the racism & classism of position that the Gulf South should once again “take one for the team.”
These are of particular concern to coastal in the Western Gulf of Mexico that are already facing the legacy of current oil and gas leasing, continued outfall from the BP disaster & the massive fossil fuel buildout of LNG exports, refineries and chemical plants along our coasts.
We cant sacrifice certain historically marginalized parts of the country to future pollution from oil & gas development as part of a deal to unlock massive clean energy potential in other areas of the country. @TexasSierraClub supports most of this bill but calls for amendments.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I agree with @DouthatNYT. This is actually worth mentioning.
Before Roe, millions of men enjoyed marriages, jobs & kids they never would’ve had if we allowed women to do what they wanted with their bodies.
This actually explains everything.
