@Tesla vs. Angstrom: The Cybertruck Tooling Standoff Threatening Production
Tesla has filed an emergency federal lawsuit against Michigan-based supplier Angstrom Automotive Group LLC, accusing it of holding critical Cybertruck manufacturing tooling and parts “for ransom.”
Here’s the full background and current status.
Angstrom, a Tier-1 automotive supplier founded in 1999 and led by CEO Nagesh Palakurthi, expanded aggressively in 2025. In September 2025 it acquired Anderton Castings, an aluminum die-casting company with a key facility in Troy, Texas (near Waco).
Anderton was already supplying Tesla with specialized Cybertruck (and some Model Y) components. Tesla had paid for both the parts and the custom multi-ton tooling used to produce them — die-cast tools, trim dies, fixtures, gauges, X-ray equipment, and more.
After the acquisition, the supply relationship continued under Angstrom ownership of the Troy plant.
The July 2026 Breakdown
• July 13: Angstrom notified Tesla it planned to shut down the Troy facility and refused to cooperate on a retrieval plan for Tesla’s tooling.
• Mid-July: Angstrom allegedly demanded extra compensation for tooling modifications and offered to keep the plant running only if Tesla paid an additional $250,000 per week (on top of existing purchase orders). Tesla characterizes this as holding its own property for ransom.
• July 17: Roughly 700 finished Tesla components that were scheduled to ship never left the facility.
• July 21: Tesla teams (accompanied by law enforcement) arrived to retrieve the equipment and were denied access.
• July 23: Tesla filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas (Tesla, Inc. v. Angstrom Automotive Group, LLC, Case No. 6:26-cv-00477), seeking an emergency court order solely for access to reclaim its tooling and the held parts.
What’s at Stake
Tesla says:
• No other supplier can currently make these specific components.
• Its on-hand inventory will run out in “mere days.”
• Without the tooling, production of several thousand Cybertrucks already committed to customers is at risk.
• Replacing the complex, multi-ton equipment would take 5–6 months.
Tesla is not seeking broader damages or contract litigation in this filing, only immediate recovery of its property so Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas can continue uninterrupted.
Angstrom has not issued a public statement. Court dockets show the company is actively responding to the emergency motions.
The Bigger Picture
This isn’t the first time Angstrom has had legal dispute issues recently. In 2024, Angstrom was accused & found liable for the Eaton Corporation Breach of Contract Verdict a& Bankruptcy where it was hit with a $30 million jury verdict in June 2024 won by power electronics giant Eaton Corporation in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.
Angstrom was found liable for breach of contract, breach of express warranty, & breach of implied warranty of merchantability over defective transmission levers causing field clutch failures.
This resulted in Angstrom subsidiary Wrena, LLC filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September 2024 citing liabilities between $10 million & $50 million tied to the verdict which was affirmed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in February 2026.
Concerning the Cybertruck parts & tooling situation unfolding now, this appears to be is a classic (& high-stakes) automotive supply-chain dispute over customer-owned tooling when a relationship or facility ends.
With Cybertruck production trying to ramp up to meet high demand, particularly with orders for the $59K AWD version offered for a 10-day period in late February, any multi-day or multi-week interruption could have real downstream effects on deliveries.
The case is still in its earliest stages. More details will emerge as the court rules on Tesla’s request for emergency access.

"Determined to maintain their individual transportation independence, they are using Tesla’s hands-free FSD system as a driver assist. Though by no means exclusive to seniors in its ability to add another set of eyes to the road, FSD helps elderly drivers maintain a cocoon around their car as their confidence in reflexes and eyesight naturally deteriorate.
92-year-old Leonard Kraus uses Tesla FSD (Supervised) for 87% of his miles. He recommended Tesla FSD to his 95-year-old brother-in-law. “I don't think I would be driving without it.”
“It's as good a driver as I am,” said Dick Amacher, 78, a retired General Motors engineer from Rochester Hills who drives his Model Y and Model 3 on FSD 98% of the time. “Here's the thing, it will not go through a red light. It will not go through a stop sign. Every once in a while, I've driven through neighborhoods where stop signs were partially obscured by low hanging branches, for example. . . and (the Tesla) sees them before I do.”
Driving into Detroit, FSD exited the expressway near Wayne State. “All of a sudden the Tesla pulls over to the curb. I'm like: ‘what is going on?’” said the 78-year old. “Turns out there was an emergency vehicle coming from behind. FSD saw that it was an emergency vehicle before I did. It has vision in every direction simultaneously. A human being cannot replicate that.”

Tesla has struck a long-term deal to buy electricity from a big solar and battery project in Arizona, developer ContourGlobal said.
The firm will sell 90% of the output from Project Sterling to Tesla. The facility is scheduled to begin operating in 2028 and will include 509MW of peak solar generation and 360MW of four-hour battery storage.
