Over a period of six weeks, about 80,000 women were brutally raped and tortured by Japanese soldiers, including young girls and elderly women. Many were mutilated and killed after being assaulted, and the overall death toll ranges from 200,000 to 300,000 people. The Rape of Nanjing is considered the worst mass rape in world history.

The scale was staggering. Rape victims ranged from infants to the elderly, and were often murdered afterward. We sent out coal trucks from Hsiakwan to the city streets and villages to seize a lot of women. And then each of them was allocated to 15 to 20 soldiers for sexual intercourse and abuse."

General Matsui Iwane and Lieutenant General Tani Hisao, who had personally participated in acts of murder and rape, were found guilty of war crimes by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East and were executed.
