We’ve spent months putting together an immersive special issue of Quanta Magazine that explores the ultimate scientific quest: the search for the fundamental nature of reality. Don’t miss it!

If you sandwich a ball between two parallel planes, it will roll perfectly. But surprisingly, smaller, pointier shapes can do this too. Do such shapes exist in higher dimensions? A new math proof says yes. @GregoryJBarber reports: https://t.co/llCoTzCRIM
Hexagons pack the 2D plane better than any other shape. What’s the worst shape? A rounded octagon is likely the worst shape, subject to certain constraints, but a proof for this has eluded mathematicians. A new paper brings them closer than ever before. @GregoryJBarber reports:

this is such a great profile of @Ada_Palmer, especially this part. @GregoryJBarber has a great way with words (alt text completed in next tweet) https://t.co/6h2T4e77ab
I was one of the many affected by the recent layoffs at @WIRED. baby's first media layoff! I joined WIRED when I was 22, and I was very lucky to land at a place where I was given so much room to grow as a journalist.
Each year, billions of animals die for human ends. In two new books, Martha Nussbaum and Peter Singer insist that we stop the suffering. https://t.co/OSz0NM8DNV
I'm no longer @WIRED. I was the luckiest to land there out of college and have freedom to build beats and write big features on a truly boggling array of topics.
Excited for what's next. For now, that's freelancing (unless this industry magically starts hiring)...
I’m happy to have a couple of stories on this list, but even more I’m struck by how many of these pieces are large, involved, patient, literary in concern, and off the main path. When people with shiny smiles tell you nobody is interested in reading anymore—don’t believe them.
I’m so grateful to all the workers who trusted me to tell their stories @WIRED these past few years. It’s been an honor and a thrill. I learned from the best and got to write about dogged union fights, donor-conceived family reunions, employees grappling with layoffs, and more.
Welp @WIRED laid me off alongside a bunch of other talented people, and on the way out the door I want to appreciate some stories that I was proud to write while reporting on how AI can harm people, accelerate inequality, violate human rights, and threaten society. A thread 🧵:
I'm sorry to say that after two years at @WIRED I've been laid off along with many of my beloved and talented colleagues.
I'm so grateful to have worked with journalists and editors who are the very best at what they do, and I am truly going to miss them.
*** Everyone, I have devastating news: A tsunami of layoffs swept through WIRED, and I am among the victims. The majority of the science desk was gutted, features was hit, 3 union stewards and 2/3 of the union's diversity committee (incl me) are out. (1/7) https://t.co/oUT6dmUAnq
(Heart)BREAKING NEWS: After 20 years @WIRED , I was among the group of talented editors, writers, designers, and others laid off last Thursday. I am grateful for the career I was able to build there and proud of the work we all did together.
I'll continue to report on climate accountability, as well as new energy tech. But I'm also excited to return to my roots covering AI, tech culture, hardware, etc.
