For Robert Gates, that helmet isn’t just a piece of equipment… it represents a lifetime of service, sacrifice, and breaking barriers.

Being a firefighter wasn’t something he did.

It’s who he is.

Gates served 27 years with the Fulton County Fire Service and became the first Black Battalion Chief in the city.

When he joined, there weren’t any Black firefighters.

He faced challenges and discrimination head-on, but he never let that define him. “If you can do that job, I can do that job well, too,” he said.

At 91, he is the oldest retired Fulton County Firefighter.

Every day, his work was about people: saving lives, protecting property, and showing up for the community.

“I always just believed we should treat each other how we want to be treated. That’s what I do and that’s what we did in the fire service.”

His dedication and leadership helped transform the department and paved the way for future generations of firefighters.

The helmet may be retired, but Robert Gates’ legacy is still alive… a reminder that courage, heart, and perseverance can change a city. 🙏🏻
