Bonus Songs: Ohia tour diary entry, 3/14/03: Because of a fiery and inspiring conversation I had with Pete and Molina outside of Emo’s about the impending war in Iraq, I used the lobby computer at the Marriott in Austin, TX, to join the ACLU for the first time.
We’re about to the point where I see Billy Bob Thornton open for Willie Nelson, after which I wander over to a Daniel Johnston show and, in awe, spill an entire pint of Southern Comfort down the front of me because I missed my mouth attempting to drink it. 2/2
I’m doing a daily tour diary of my first full songs: Ohia tour, which happened twenty years ago this month, over at my IG (also groakus). I don’t have a lot of pictures, but I do have a lot of stories. 1/2
A guy who I noticed running barefoot and wearing nothing but boxer shorts in downtown Raleigh tried to break into my van yesterday morning at 7:30. A helpful Subway employee clued me in. This was after she gave him a cup of water. Obviously everything is fine.
Hosting Kurt Heasley of @theLILYS at @sweetanisette on Wednesday, 8/10. The show will be outside and like any DIY show we’ll be stealing electricity from our neighbors, borrowing bathrooms from businesses a few doors down, and selling really good wine.
Just remembered: In 96 I was part of a thankfully unrecorded flash mob. I and 5(?) HS folk were hired by a Purdue comm prof to break into “I’ll be There for You” by the Rembrandts mid-class. I bet actual students now get drunk and tell this story as their worst day in college.
2016: Russia cyber-attacks US to help elect Trump; Republicans gut anti-Russian policy from platform
2017: Republicans obstruct investigation into ongoing Russian cyber-attack on US
2018: Trump prostates himself to Putin in Helsinki, declaring his trust of Russia over US
I had the pleasure of eating lunch with Peter Bogdanovich once. Lots of memorable moments and quotes, but maybe my favorite was this: “I used to think that Howard Hawks was the coolest person I would ever meet, but then I met Tom Petty.” RIP.
@burntreverb Frankly I have no idea what liquids I consumed growing up, but likely Kool-Aid or Crystal Lite or Squirt or sun tea. No water or milk though, never.
I’ve never had a glass of unadulterated cow’s milk in my life. Chocolate milk, maybe twice; ice cream, of course; milk-based desserts, naturally; but never, once, have I drunk a glass of straight up milk. Never have I dipped a cookie or anything in it either. And yet, I live.
I am very excited that I was asked to, and then subsequently did, perform sax playing on @trevorthornton ‘s new Kittinfish Mountain release. It is quite a trip.
For the turining of the year, here's our rendition of "Roda Viva" by Chico Buarque, on which @groakus plays the alto and tenor saxaphones:

Magnolia played in Hamburg at Knust 12 years ago today. It was our second to last tour, and the only one we did on a bus. I have several disconnected memories from that day. Some are sad. One is funny. All of them involve me sweating profusely.
@kevinneil I remember we drove back to Seattle that night after the show. I think we hid merch at a gas station in the states so we wouldn’t have to pay tariffs. Thanks for being there!
I don’t remember the falafel. I do remember listening to “Born to Run” in the back of the bus with Sal, our new bass player, and have since seen footage of us doing a pretty good imitation of the exciting bridge. So it was worth it.
