I’m @TheOfficialSBI & @canarabank customer and proud of the staff who serve us even beyond working hours. I support the bank strike and stand in solidarity with bankers. Govt & management should engage with employees directly, instead of dragging customers for your politics.
Here is a glimpse of the stress: meetings start at 8 AM; most of the branches run with one officer and two clerks for 20,000 customers. Now customers want service, and bosses want insurance and government schemes like PMJJBY and PMSBY. As a single officer, you are supposed to serve those 20,000 customers, process 20 gold loans and SME loans, visit the market, and conduct inspections. You sell insurance on weekdays and do recoveries on weekends. You cannot plan any weekend because nobody knows when they will call you into the office. You get transferred every two years to remote corners of the country. Sometimes North Indians are sent to extreme Tamil Nadu and get harassed for not knowing the language. You cannot leave your place of posting without permission, so if your boss wants to torture you, they will prevent you from going to your hometown even on holidays; the result you can see in the image.
Bankers are not asking for something new. The MOU regarding five-day banking was already signed between the IBA and the unions in 2023. See the attachment. On the basis of that, salary settlements happened. Bankers accepted lower settlements at that time because five-day banking was agreed upon. Now, if the government does not honor its own agreement, what can a common banker do other than agitate?
@ElonUncleSays One suicide from IT sector was discussed in India.
One IITian committed suicide is still in news.
But more than 500 bankers committed suicide and yet we are nowhere in discussion.
Bankers Indian nahi h? Insaan nahi hai? Kisi ke bete beti nahi hai? Kisi ke pati nahi h?
Bankers are demanding five days work week.. and the system is still not listening. This is the story of why they must.
In memory of my dear friend, Durgesh Ranjan, 40, Branch Manager, of a PSB somewhere in Rural North India.
The last time we spoke, his voice was tired but glowing. He told me about the PMJJBY loans he had disbursed to the needy, how the villagers treated him like their own elder, how he called his job his life's purpose.
"Through this chair, this stamp, these papers, I get to do good for society," he said. He meant every word. He always did.
On the night of 24th September, Durgesh was found dead in his car on the Lucknow–Varanasi highway. Police recovered a letter he left behind.
The letter said: "I am ending my life myself. No one should be blamed for this. I apologise to everyone."
Even in his final moments, he was apologising. The kindest people always do.
His wife, told police he had been under stress for about a week. One week of visible stress, and behind it, years of invisible weight. A branch manager's chair in a PSB today carries impossible targets, endless audits, relentless calls, seven days of duty disguised as a job.
Durgesh never complained. Not once. He carried it all quietly, completely, alone.
He didn't fall because he was weak. He fell because he was asked to be strong every single day, without rest, without pause, without anyone saying: "Enough. Go home. Live your life."
A five-day work week is not a luxury. It is not laziness. It is not entitlement.
It is oxygen. The villagers didn't respect Durgesh because he worked seven days. They respected him because he was kind, patient, and present. A banker who has rested can serve with heart. Bankers hold entire communities together, but who holds the bankers?
Nearly 90 bank employee deaths and suicides have been reported since 2014. Durgesh is no longer just a statistic to us. He was a friend. A son. A husband. A man who helped forty-seven families sleep peacefully while his own sleep was stolen by files and targets.
No more Durgesh Ranjans. No more families shattered by a system that keeps asking for more. No public sector bank employee should ever suffer this fate again.
Five days of work. Two days of life. They deserve it. *He deserved it.
Rest in peace, brother. You should still be sitting behind that counter, laughing with your villagers, calling me at midnight about the forty-eighth family you helped.
We will keep telling your story until the rules finally change. 🙏

Dear Comrades,
The fight for Five-Day Banking must not be seen merely as a struggle for implementation of an agreement that has remained pending for more than 30 months. This is a fight for our existence, our dignity, our families and our fundamental right to a humane working life.
Public Sector Bank employees serve far more customers than our private-sector counterparts. Even with private banks accounting for a substantial share of the banking market, it is overwhelmingly the Public Sector Banks and their employees who carry the burden of Government-sponsored schemes, financial inclusion, social-sector banking and the last-mile delivery of public policy.
We work for institutions owned by the people and for a Government that expects us to reach every citizen. We have never shied away from that responsibility. But those who expect us to serve the nation must also recognise one simple truth:
We are not robots. We are not machines. We are not AI tools. We are human beings.
We have families waiting for us, children who need our time, parents who need our care, and lives beyond targets, reviews, late-night meetings and relentless workplace pressure.
We are not asking for privilege. We are asking for dignity, balance and justice.
The growing culture of excessive working hours, constant pressure and an increasingly toxic work environment cannot become the new normal. Five-Day Banking is one important step towards restoring humanity to our workplaces.
Save the banker. Save the banking family. Respect the commitment already made.
Five-Day Banking is not a luxury.
It is not an unreasonable demand.
It is a just demand whose time has come.
Let us stand together, for ourselves, for our families and for the generations of bankers who will come after us.
Five-Day Banking is For Dignity. For Family. For a Humane Workplace.
March ahead with courage and unity for the three-day strike from 28th to 30th September and make it a resounding success. No fear, no threat and no intimidation can weaken our collective resolve. Officers and employees stand together , we are all strikers in this historic struggle.

#5DayBankingNow is hashtag for our long pending demands which was promised by then Govt. Bankers are working hard, contributing Economy growth, making banks profitable with meagre staffs strengths. Bankers are compelled to do strike, not by choice. Govt must honour commitment.
Two years of waiting.
Two years of assurances.
Two years of delay.
Our message is simple:
