how far we are from the Steve Jobs era Silicon Valley! one incredibly underdiscussed aspect of SF culture these days is that it is deeply aspiritual. think back to the late 60s and 70s, when the confluence of hippies and technical people birthed an attitude that treated technology as a gift to be given to the world; not to mention the cost of living allowed for these two groups to be physically located near each other and reflexively influence each other

these days many AI researchers/thinkers are influenced by the ratsphere-- which has huge merits for what it did to broadly accessible epistemics and sparked important discussions around AI safety, altruism, etc-- but the lack of a spiritual anchor for the people building the most consequential technology in all of human history has yielded instead a pervasive fear and doom, and when they express their usually very earnest concerns, their doom is unfortunately imprinted onto the general public, which is poorly equipped to handle such a psychological load

it is times like the last 48 hours where it is saddening and stark how far removed we are from the visions of the technologists of our past. what ties me to this city is even a glimmer of hope that one day technology may be seen again as a form of divine progress.
