Mary Jane Rathbun, known as "Brownie Mary," was a prominent advocate for medical cannabis during the 1980s AIDS epidemic. Witnessing the pain and suffering of patients as a hospital volunteer in San Francisco, Rathbun recognized the potential benefits of cannabis for those in extreme physical pain. Being a cannabis consumer herself, she began baking and distributing weed-infused brownies to people in medical need, including AIDS and cancer patients, free of charge.

Rathbun's compassionate efforts gained attention and support, despite cannabis being illegal in California at the time. Sympathetic individuals donated illegal cannabis, while she personally funded the brownie ingredients and baked them in her own kitchen. Despite facing three arrests, Rathbun garnered local, national, and international sympathy from those involved in the Cannabis movement.

During her peak, Rathbun baked around 500 brownies daily, all without charging a penny, driven by her belief in helping those in need. Her iconic status within the global cannabis movement persists today, even among individuals who do not consume cannabis, as she tirelessly supported those facing illness, pain, and societal rejection.

Mary Jane Rathbun passed away in 1999, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and advocacy. Her actions during a time when AIDS was poorly understood and stigmatized provided comfort to patients often abandoned in their darkest hours.
