It’s the feast of St. Jude, one of the most popular saints around. We go to Jesus through his intercession for impossible causes. We don’t really know why – scholars speculate it’s because he was the forgotten apostle, because he was mixed up with Judas Iscariot. So, St. Jude gives us a lot of hope. I am deeply saddened to learn of Walter Koenig’s passing.
Although we did not know each other well away from the set, we shared the later seasons of the original Star Trek series and the six films that followed.
What I observed, and what so many fans have expressed over the years, was a man who genuinely loved the Star Trek community.
At conventions, Walter was rarely content to remain behind a signing table. He preferred to be among the people who had kept Star Trek alive for so many decades.
That kind of genuine connection is rare, and it will be remembered by everyone who came into contact with him.
My condolences to his family, his friends, and the countless fans whose lives he touched.

Yesterday I had a very moving Mass in honor of two police officers killed in the line of duty on the same day 38 years ago. They really believed when Jesus said, greater love than this nobody has, than to give his or her life for another. That's what they did! That's why I have such admiration for our police officers. That's why I'm so honored to serve as one of their co-chaplains here in New York. @thegnewsroom
