What is being done to Mallam Nasir El-Rufai is not due process; it is state-sanctioned torture dressed in bureaucratic language.

The refusal to allow his personal physician access to him directly violates Section 34(1)(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which guarantees that every Nigerian shall be treated with respect to the dignity of his person and that no person shall be subjected to cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.

Blocking a detainee's doctor is not protocol. It is cruelty. The ICPC's conduct also violates a standing court order granting El-Rufai unrestricted medical access, making this contempt of court, compounding an already unconscionable abuse of power.

The Tinubu administration's weaponization of the ICPC as a political instrument of oppression further violates Section 35 of the Constitution, which enshrines the fundamental right to personal liberty and mandates that any detention conform strictly to law, not to arbitrary curfews invented by agency officials.

No democratic government that respects the rule of law detains opponents, ignores courts, and then denies the detainee food and medicine.

Tinubu's government has crossed a threshold that must not go unanswered by the international community.

We call unequivocally for the immediate and unconditional release of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
