โ ๏ธ The Illegal Detention of Nasir El-Rufai Is a Disgrace to Nigeria's Constitutional Order โ ๏ธ
The administration of President Bola Tinubu stands today in open and contemptuous breach of Nigeria's supreme law.
What is being done to Mallam Nasir El-Rufai is not due process; it is state-sanctioned torture dressed in bureaucratic language.
The refusal to allow his personal physician access to him directly violates Section 34(1)(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which guarantees that every Nigerian shall be treated with respect to the dignity of his person and that no person shall be subjected to cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.
Blocking a detainee's doctor is not protocol. It is cruelty. The ICPC's conduct also violates a standing court order granting El-Rufai unrestricted medical access, making this contempt of court, compounding an already unconscionable abuse of power.
The Tinubu administration's weaponization of the ICPC as a political instrument of oppression further violates Section 35 of the Constitution, which enshrines the fundamental right to personal liberty and mandates that any detention conform strictly to law, not to arbitrary curfews invented by agency officials.
Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which Nigeria is a signatory, explicitly prohibits arbitrary detention and demands humane treatment of all persons deprived of liberty.
The denial of his wife's delivery of an evening meal, over a self-invented 6:30 pm cutoff, is not a procedural matter.
It is deliberate degradation.
The UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (the Nelson Mandela Rules), Rule 22, specifically mandates adequate nutrition and family contact for all detainees.
Nigeria is in flagrant violation of every one of these binding obligations.
This is a pattern, not an incident.
President Tinubu is deploying federal agencies as weapons against political opponents, in direct contravention of Section 36 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to a fair hearing, and Article 7 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, adopted into Nigerian law by the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act, Cap A9, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
The systematic denial of legal rights to El-Rufai in defiance of judicial orders is the very definition of tyranny.
No democratic government that respects the rule of law detains opponents, ignores courts, and then denies the detainee food and medicine.
Tinubu's government has crossed a threshold that must not go unanswered by the international community.
We call unequivocally for the immediate and unconditional release of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
We further call upon the United Nations Human Rights Council, the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the European Union, the United States Department of State, and the ECOWAS Commission to impose immediate targeted sanctions, travel bans, and financial penalties on President Tinubu and all ICPC officials directly responsible for these violations.
And justice, however long it takes, will prevail.

LEAKED AUDIO ROCKS NIGER POLITICS ๐ฅ
Tension erupts as Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and former loyal supporter, Mustapha Danyarbawa, clash in a heated voice call over criticism posted on Facebook. ๐ณ๐
Danyarbawa reportedly accused the governor of abandoning loyal supporters who stood by him during the struggle, while giving influence to newcomers after assuming office.
The criticism allegedly triggered a personal phone call from Governor Bago, leading to a tense exchange now circulating online. In the leaked audio, the governor was heard angrily confronting his former supporter, while Danyarbawa repeatedly maintained that he had no intention of insulting anyone.
The recording is already generating massive reactions across social media. ๐๐ฅ
