I travel frequently, so I think I'm going to start occasionally posting my thoughts about rental cars I encounter. This trip, it's a Genesis GV70.

A very heavy, quite luxurious SUV that very closely resembles a Bentley Bentayga. Relatively quick, with MASSIVE brakes to account for its elephantine stature. The interior is extremely comfortable and quiet, although I find the choice of infotainment controls rather strange. It appears as though they attempted to incorporate a Mazda or Lexus style control system that reduces the amount of time you're tapping on a screen, but I just find it fiddly and annoying for Carplay control. One feature I do enjoy is that the seat belt tightens around you when you brake or turn very hard, seems like a great compromise when ditching an uncomfortable bucket seat with stiff bolsters. The transmission is reminiscent of a slightly more responsive Crown Victoria, not anywhere near a modern ZF.

Overall, it is one of the better luxury SUVs I've rented recently. It has an incredibly plush ride, passable sound system for a luxury vehicle, and quite competent driving dynamics for its weight. It seems like all the designers and engineers Hyundai poached from the big German brands are paying off. I will definitely be renting one again if it's available.
