@kaitlinshiple I 100% agree! Regardless of who or where you are in life, learning how to and why we communicate is hugely beneficial and should be a bigger topic of conversation!

@fordlsophia I also really enjoyed this theory because sometimes it answers the already preexisting questions we may have about our family dynamics which can make it very informative!

After this course, my biggest takeaway will be the consciousness in communication I exert & receive in my own life. From nonverbal, to family patterns, to privacy management. The complexity of communication is what makes it so interesting!

One of my favored theories from this course is the Expectancy Violations Theory. Under most circumstances I consider myself an introvert so this theory revealed the effects of nonverbal violations on interpersonal communication outcomes.

@LillianShermans Such a good example! I feel like this is the most common way it’s seen because politics are motivated by making statements that reach particular audiences who may favor this type of content.

@TStearns_UT I would definitely have to agree with your argument. Especially as you mention tiktok, I cannot tell you how often I’ve liked or searched up one particular topic and lol of a sudden it’s my entire for you page lol.

I think agenda-setting theory is still relevant and will continue to expand as social media sites do. Sites, such as TikTok, have very powerful algorithms that accommodate every user and sometimes the story one user sees is framed the same or differently.

The original video was deleted and articles are framed in the media by suggesting it’s truth, to questioning its credibility, to even comparing it to similar cases.

An example of media shaping the public agenda is seen with the claim that there was a rat found in an energy drink (AlaniNu). This went viral on TikTok and caused concern for other energy drink brands such as Celsius and Red Bull.
@LillianShermans This is so comforting to see, especially with Harry Styles. He’s a great example because he’s been various different phases of his life and career at such a young age that it feels like his audience went through it with him.

@TStearns_UT Your gif symbolizes a lot when it comes to this discussion. It’s a bit concerning when companies charge so much money for a service and make a killing from it but those in power see more of it than anyone else would.

I’d say my parasocial relationship is most commonly seen with the Gilmore Girls. When I watch it back now it brings me a sense of comfort in how I relate to the bond between a mother & daughter and find myself even trying to be as witty as Lorelai.

This gif represents the realization of how methodical companies can be with providing incentives to purchase particular subscriptions. Especially because sometimes the subscription amount is doubled down the road.
#UTcommtheory
I chose to review Paramount plus where I learned that Walmart partnered with this company so if customers purchased a Walmart+ subscription, they’d get the streaming service for free as well as employees have access to a free account.
@fordlsophia The classic song lyric as a caption is my go too as well, but like you & Lillian mentioned sometimes it’s read too much into or not understood by particular individuals.

This gif represents content collapse in the form of performing identity. For example: when I repost post a positive or encouraging quote for the front stage but backstage I looked like this making the post..

@LillianShermans This is a good thing to point out especially because we still see options of zoom callls & virtual meetings today which I don’t think was as available before this crisis.

While this robbed individuals of that typical experience, it positively impacted the human capability of showing up even through the toughest times.

COVID-19 produced the benefit of creativity under particular circumstances. Where physical interactions were limited, ppl had to be creative in ways to celebrate & acknowledge events such as birthdays, graduation, weddings, etc.
@LillianShermans I also find myself dabbling in the avoiding orientation style when there’s it’s a conflict with someone who I know has a temper or where the conflict wouldn’t get resolved by confronting it.
