Why Poland Is So Extraordinary

Poland is extraordinary because it endured repeated attempts to erase it from existence and yet preserved its identity, culture, and belief in freedom.

Historically, Poland should not have survived. Powerful neighbors invaded, partitioned, and occupied it, but the Polish people never abandoned who they were.

For 123 years, from 1795 to 1918, Poland disappeared from the map of Europe. Its lands were divided among Russia, Prussia, and Austria, and its language and identity were suppressed. Still, Poland lived on in families, churches, literature, and memory. Its borders vanished, but the nation did not.

That resilience is what draws me most.

I admire Polish history, culture, and especially the people—their loyalty, hospitality, humor, and strength. Poland has often stood between German and Russian power, yet it repeatedly emerged from catastrophe.

In 1683, King Jan III Sobieski helped break the Ottoman siege of Vienna. In 1920, Poland defeated the Red Army at the Battle of Warsaw, stopping Soviet expansion into Central Europe.

Poles also contributed to the freedom of others. Kazimierz Pułaski and Tadeusz Kościuszko fought in the American Revolution. Some Polish soldiers sent to Haiti later supported its independence and settled there.

During World War II, Poland was invaded by Germany and the Soviet Union. Despite this, it continued fighting. The government operated in exile, while the Underground State maintained secret institutions and resistance forces. Polish pilots distinguished themselves in the Battle of Britain, and Polish mathematicians helped break the Enigma code.

At the same time, Poland suffered immense destruction. German and Soviet forces targeted its leaders and culture. In 1940, the NKVD murdered around 22,000 Polish officers and intellectuals in the Katyn massacres. Poles also faced a genocide from 1937 -1938 in the Soviet Union with the execution of 110,000.

Poles fought throughout the war, but freedom did not return immediately. Poland remained under communist rule until 1989, when resistance movements like Solidarity helped restore independence.

Poland’s achievements go beyond war. The Constitution of May 3, 1791, was one of the first modern constitutions. Warsaw, destroyed during the war, was carefully rebuilt. Poland also produced figures like Copernicus, Maria Skłodowska-Curie, and Joseph Conrad.

Still, Poland’s greatest achievement may be survival.

It endured partitions, occupation, terror, and dictatorship. Again and again, it was declared gone. Again and again, it returned.

Its story is not only one of suffering, but of resilience, of culture, faith, and freedom surviving against the odds.

Poland shows that a nation lives in its people and in what they refuse to surrender.

The deeper you look, the more extraordinary Poland becomes.

🇵🇱 Zdynia. 16 lipca wieczorem tuż przed Łemkowską Watrą, 46-letni Ukrainiec zaatakował nożem 37-letniego Andrzeja Barnę – radnego powiatu gorlickiego i członka zarządu Zjednoczenia Łemków.
Kilkukrotnie dźgnięty nożem radny został przewieziony do szpitala w Gorlicach, jego życiu nie zagraża niebezpieczeństwo.
